Hoi An comes under spotlight in Italy

La Stampa introduced readers to the town’s history since it was a busy trading port on the north bank of Hoai River between the 16 th and 17 th centuries, saying that a fusion of indigenous and foreign cultures, which has been carefully preserved to date, is what makes the town attractive to visitors.

It appeals to visitors with beautiful tiled-roof houses embellished with unique details and carved wooden pillars alongside folk symbols to protect the owners from misfortune.

Both Eastern and Western influences can be seen in Hoi An, ranging from pagodas and bridges in Chinese and Vietnamese designs to remains of the French colonial mansions, the newspaper said.

Tourists should not miss Hoi An during its magical full moon nights as electric lights are switched off and the streets sparkle in the light of silk lanterns hung from houses to shops.

The article also recommended several restaurants, coffee shops and hotels to its readers where they can experience local cuisine without breaking the bank.

Hoi An was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.

Vietnam’s towns and landscapes have been recommended by foreign newspapers and travel magazines, such as La Repubblica, La, Stampa, Dove and Conde Nast Traveller.

Sapa, Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, the Mekong Delta and Hoi An are the most-frequently mentioned favourite destinations.

Vietnam welcomed around 50,000 Italian travellers and some 7 million international arrivals in 2013.

“Thai Cultural Weekend” opens in Hanoi

Visitors to a weekend Thai festival can mingle with artistic dance performers and learn about the country"s cuisine.

The Bunditpatanasilpa Institute sent 25 artists to perform traditional and contemporary dance pieces including Khon (Ramayana masked dance), the four-region dance, a dance worshipping the god king and a cock-fighting dance.

Khon is the most stylised Thai dance form. It is performed by troupes of silent dancers, while a stage-side chorus tells a story to go along with the traditional choreography. Costumes are dictated by tradition, with good and evil angels wearing colourful masks.

This event marks the beginning of a series of cultural events held under the Cultural Co-operation Agreement between Thailand and Vietnam. It was signed during Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha"s official visit to Vietnam last year.

Ambassador of Thailand to Vietnam Panyarak Poolthup hoped that through dances of different Thai regions, the Vietnamese would know more about the diversity of the art genres of Thailand, making contributions to bringing Thai and Vietnamese people together.

Insurspannce policies for foreign workers

Photo Vneconomy

Foreign nationals working in Viet Nam can avail of several insurance schemes, in which the participation of the enterprises they work for has been made mandatory.

Mandatory social insurance embodies plans for sickness, maternity, labour accidents, occupational disease, pension and survivorship allowance. Health insurance includes medical care supported by the Health Insurance Fund. Unemployment insurance comprises of unemployment allowance; job counselling and recommendation; vocational training support and skills training, fostering and improving support. Under the 2013 Law on Employment, foreign employees are not obliged to participate in unemployment insurance.

Social insurance

In accordance with the 2006 Law on Social Insurance, foreign employees in Viet Nam are not obliged to participate in mandatory or voluntary social insurance. However, under the new provisions of the 2014 Law on Social Insurance, which will come into effect on January 1, 2016, foreign employees whose work permits, practice licenses or certificates were granted by competent Vietnamese authorises are subject to mandatory social insurance.

Health insurance

Foreign employees (including paid enterprise managers), who work under indefinite labour contracts or definite contracts for a term of three full months or more in Viet Nam are obligated to participate in health insurance under the current regulations. Foreign employees pay a third and employers pay two-thirds of the insurance premiums with the maximum rate fixed at 6 per cent of the monthly salary.

Foreign employees’ salary, which acts as the base for calculating health insurance premiums is the salary stated in their labour contracts and mandated to be calculated in dong (in case the salary in the labour contracts is in foreign currency). The foreign exchange rate is based on the average rate of the interbank foreign currency market quoted by the State Bank of Viet Nam on January 2 for the first six months and July 1 for the last six months of the year. The foreign employees’ insurance premiums are deducted from salary and paid to the Health Insurance Fund by the employers on a monthly, quarterly or biannual basis in case the enterprise is operating in the field of agriculture, forestry, fishery and the salt industry (manufacturing and processing salt). The level of health insurance enjoyed by the foreign employees is 80 per cent of the health care fees. — PFL – LAWFIRM

Vietnam still unsure about time for airspanort respanairs; one-month delay spanossible

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam could delay the plan to upgrade the taxiway and apron at the country’s biggest airport by one month under a tentative proposal apparently issued under pressure from local airlines.

The country’s aviation watchdog is working with the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to “agree upon a suitable time to reduce the use of the taxiway CHC 25L/07R” at Tan Son Nhat International Airport to serve the upgrade, the CAAV said in a press release late Tuesday.

“The upgrade is expected to run from May 10 to July 25,” the announcement reads.

The new date is exactly one month later than earlier proposed by the ACV, which wanted to have the taxiway and apron at the Ho Chi Minh City airport upgraded between April 10 and June 25.

Vietnamese carriers are worried that their flying schedules at the airport, and the flying time of one million passengers, will be greatly affected during the construction work.

The airlines will be required to cut their flight numbers during what will be a high demand season for air travel as it is summer time and many public holidays fall in those two months.

“The CAAV has yet to determine the time for the repair project to start,” the aviation authority said in the same announcement.

“The CAAV and ACV will officially report to the Ministry of Transport [about the issue] on April 2.”

CAAV chief Lai Xuan Thanh told local media on Monday that the upgrading project will not affect the travel of passengers and the operations of airlines.

“No matter what plan for the upgrade is adopted, we ensure there will be no impact on the travel of people during the April-May holiday,” Thanh was quoted by Dan Tri (Intellectual) newswire as saying.

Vietnam will enjoy a six-day holiday from April 28 to May 3, thanks to the coincidence of three national festivals, namely the death anniversary of the Hung Kings, believed to be the founders of the nation (April 28), Reunification Day (April 30), and International Labor Day (May 1), in a week.

News that Vietnam will reduce traffic at its largest airport has ignited concerns among carriers and passengers, local and foreign alike.

Passengers who have booked flights between April and June are worried that their flights will be canceled, and shocked at up to 80 flights being possibly scrapped on a daily basis during the upgrade work.

Tan Son Nhat currently sees up to 30 flights departing or landing on an hourly basis, and the frequency should be cut to 25 flights per hour during the upgrade, according to the plan.

The CAAV has said the 25 flight frequency is only a proposal rather than an official decision.

Japanese cherry blossom festival to take place at Thang Long royal citadel

During the festival, Yosakoi traditional dance, cosplay performances, martial arts performances, and an introduction to special Japanese food will be held.

Apart from the usual Sakura decoration, there will be interesting activities such as Sakura planting, exhibition, and an area introducing Sakura and photography.

The Japanese cherry blossom festival was first held in 2007. Each year, the festival attracts more than 100,000 visitors. This is an outstanding cultural activity in Viet Nam to introduce Japanese culture to visitors.

Last year, the festival took place at the Viet Nam Exhibition and Fair Centre on Giang Vo Street, Ha Noi in March. Organised by the Japan-Viet Nam Cultural Association Foundation, fresh cherry blossoms were imported from Japan and displayed at the festival.

IPU delegates share their views on Viet Nam

The participants also enjoyed a stage performance named "Colours of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups" introducing a number of traditional arts. Viet Nam News took the opportunity to ask some of the international guests about their impressions of Viet Nam.

Juan Pablo, Chile

"I have great impressions of Viet Nam. The country combines the old and the new. It has thousands of years of history but it is also a new nation of independence. Recent development has brought tremendous changes. I think this country has a lot of history, but is still a young nation.

"I"ve had a great time and feel a sense of expectation.

"This is my second visit to Viet Nam. Compared to my last time four years ago, I can see more buildings now. It"s a growing Viet Nam. Vietnamese are very proud of their culture, and they say it with pride."

Stella Chungong, Switzerlands

"When I first landed in HCM City, my first impression was that the people here are very nice. Everybody is very helpful, very polite and very positive.

"Then I came to Ha Noi and learnt about the different seasons here and how it moves from spring to summer.

"Before my trip, I knew that the food here is great because near my house in Geneva, there is a Vietnamese restaurant and I used to go to sometimes. The food there is very nice, but the food here is even better than Geneva.

"Today we went to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and learnt about the history of his life. I was so touched because it"s very rare to find a great man like that. And he gave so much for the people.

"When I return to Geneva, I will tell my friends that they should visit Viet Nam where the people are warm and the food is good. There are also a lot of things to learn and to see from the history and culture."

Mwaula Solopi, Zambia

"Before coming here, I knew a very little thing about this country. I want to learn more about the culture. There is a lot of development that I want to know about.

"I can feel the warm atmosphere from how people treat me here. You can"t get this from a book. You have to really come and experience it yourself.

"When I get back to my country, I will tell people that Viet Nam is a place you much visit. It is a long journey from my country, but it"s worth it."

Batzandan Jalbasuren, Mongolia

"Viet Nam has become a destination for many official events such as this Inter-Parliamentary Union General Assembly and I think the country has a great future.

"The food here is delicious. In Mongolia, people really like pho, which is quite similar to Mongolian traditional soup. I see that Vietnamese people are like Mongolians. There are many similarities between us.

Iman Altarawneh, Jordan

"I like the culture here. Vietnamese people are helpful and friendly. Viet Nam also has a very nice nature. I like the food here.

"If I want something special in my country, I will try Vietnamese food. There are some Vietnamese restaurants in the Middle East, especially in Dubai."

Petra Osarsson, Sweden

"This is the first time I have been to Viet Nam. We are staying in a hotel in central Ha Noi. I have had a chance to see the daily life of people around my hotel. I feel Vietnamese people are very hospitable. It is interesting to find that Vietnamese people often live in big families."

One million to change flying time over Ho Chi Minh City airspanort uspangrade: carriers

Vietnamese carriers are complaining that a proposed plan to upgrade the taxiway at Tan Son Nhat International Airport will force them to cancel up to hundreds of flights and as many as one million passengers to change their flying time during the construction work, thus affecting their business.

>> An audio version of the story is available here

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) is slated to expand the taxiway and the airport aprons at the Ho Chi Minh City-based airport from April 10 to June 25, a period during which airlines operating from the terminal must reduce flight numbers.

Tan Son Nhat currently sees up to 30 flights departing or landing on an hourly basis, and the frequency should be cut to 25 flights per hour during the upgrades.

This means carriers have to either cancel or adjust the schedules of a number of flights, which they say will “drive about a million passengers to change their flying time.”

The airport will suffer a huge loss in terms of fee collection, according to the airlines.

“There will be five to seven fewer flights landing at or departing from Tan Son Nhat per hour, or about 80 flights in 12 hours,” a representative from an airline told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

“This means more than ten airplanes will lay dormant on the ground and 10,000 passengers will not be able to board their flights.”

With the upgrades scheduled to take place over two and a half months, the total number of affected passengers could be as many as one million, according to the source.

Tan Son Nhat will lose up to VND12 billion (US$559,232) a day from airport fee collection, given the current VND120,000 per passenger fee. The total loss during the upgrades would be VND1.5 trillion ($69.9 million).

The ACV said that there are now 30 to 32 flights departing from and landing at Tan Son Nhat every hour from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. The number is as high as 39 flights per hour during peak time.

By reducing the frequency to 25 per hour, there will be a few dozen or even up to 100 flights canceled on a daily basis, according to the ACV.

Vietnamese airlines usually embrace the high demand season in late April, when the country celebrates Reunification Day (April 30) and International Labor Day (May 1). This year local employees will have a six-day holiday, from April 28 to May 3, thanks to the coincidence of three national festivals in a week.

Summer is also a peak season for airlines with people taking vacations.

The Vietnamese carriers have thus petitioned to delay the upgrades to August or September to avoid the peak season.

However, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has rejected the request, saying it will be the rainy season then.

CAAV chief Lai Xuan Thanh said implementing the repairs without affecting the flight schedule of the carriers is “a real headache.”

Thanh added that he had assigned relevant agencies to work with the airlines to figure out the best solution to the issue.

“The official starting time for the upgrades remains undecided,” he said.

“It can be delayed to August if we cannot compromise with the airlines… The worst case scenario is we have to push it to next year.”

Vietnam to cut taxes on 3,200 Jaspananese goods to zero starting Aspanril

Thousands of goods imported from Japan will enjoy a zero tariff in Vietnam starting April 1 in the next implementation stage of a bilateral trade agreement between the two countries.

Vietnam will reduce the tariffs for 3,234 classes of imports to 0 percent under the Japan-Vietnam Economic Partnership Agreement for the 2015-2019 period, according to the Ministry of Finance.

The beneficiaries of the zero tariff are material, machinery, equipment, spare parts, computers, electronics products and raw materials for footwear, textile and garment production.

The products must be imported directly from Japan to Vietnam and meet the rules of origin as stated in the Japan-Vietnam Economic Partnership Agreement.

Vietnam and Japan closed the economic partnership agreement in December 2008, according to the Vietnamese finance ministry. The trade pact was approved by the Vietnamese government in April 2009.

The agreement is intended to liberalize and facilitate trade in goods and services between Vietnam and Japan and improve the business environment in each of the countries, according to a copy of the trade pact obtained by Tuoi Tre News.

A product only qualifies as originating from Japan if it is wholly obtained or produced entirely in the East Asian country, according to the agreement’s rules of origin.

When the goods use materials not originating from Japan, it must have a local value content of not less than 40 percent, and the final process of production must be performed in the East Asian country.

Vietnam PM says economy recovering

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung is upbeat that his country can achieve its economic targets and plans this year, with the economy “gradually recovering” from its troubles.

“The economy is recovering, the macro-economy is stabilizing, and GDP growth is also increasing,” the premier said as he chaired a meeting to recap macro-economic management in the first quarter of 2015 in Hanoi on Monday.

PM Dung said the 6.03 percent growth in the first quarter is evidence for his remark.

He also listed many other good signs, including growing industrial production, stable foreign exchange rates, enlarged foreign reserves, and ensured public welfare and security.

The ‘victory’ gained in the first quarter adds ground to the belief that Vietnam will go on to achieve its full-year targets and plans for eco-social development in 2015, according to the premier.

The targets include a 6.2 percent growth rate, 10 percent increase in export turnover, controlled inflation, and stable foreign exchange rates, he elaborated.

The prime minister said the country can even surpass the 6.2 percent growth target.

Vietnam aviation chief says won’t let airspanort uspangrade hurt carriers in spaneak time

A planned project to expand the taxiway and apron at Tan Son Nhat International Airport will not affect the travel of passengers and the operations of airlines, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) said Monday.

Vietnamese carriers are worried that their flying schedules at the Ho Chi Minh City airport, and the flying time of one million passengers, will be greatly affected when the upgrade takes place between April 10 and June 26, according to a plan proposed by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).

The airlines will be required to cut their flight numbers during the construction work, which coincides with a high demand season for air travel as it is summer time and many public holidays fall in those two months.

“No matter what plan for the upgrade is adopted, we ensure there will be no impact on the travel of people during the April-May holiday,” CAAV Lai Xuan Thanh was quoted by Dan Tri (Intellectual) newswire as saying.

Thanh, however, admitted that the CAAV and ACV have yet to make up their mind on when to start the project.

“It depends on many factors,” he told the Hanoi-based news website, while elaborating that these include “the essentiality of the upgrade and whether it comes during the peak time of the airlines or the rainy season.”

Tan Son Nhat currently sees up to 30 flights departing or landing on an hourly basis, and the frequency should be cut to 25 flights per hour during the upgrade.

This means carriers have to either cancel or adjust the schedules of a number of flights, which they say will “drive about a million passengers to change their flying time.”

The airport will suffer a huge loss in terms of fee collection, according to the airlines.

The Vietnamese carriers have thus petitioned to delay the upgrade to August or September to avoid the peak season.

“No one builds the taxiway during the monsoon season,” Thanh was quoted as responding to the petition.

The CAAV chief also underscored that it is necessary to expand the taxiway as many airlines have purchased new aircraft.

While Jetstar Pacific only had five planes at this time of last year, the low-cost carrier has doubled its fleet, according to data obtained by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper. VietJet Air now has 23 jets compared to 15 planes a year earlier.

The aviation official also made it clear that reducing the frequency from 30 to 25 flights does not mean five flights will have to be canceled.

“Their schedule will only be changed to the off-peak time,” he told Dan Tri.

In a separate interview with Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper, Thanh said the ACV plan in which the upgrade is set for the April 10 – June 26 period has not received the final approval from the CAAV.

The aviation authority has tasked the ACV with preparing a more effective plan that will have the minimal impact on the operations of the carriers.

The airlines, meanwhile, are requested to submit their reports on how their operations will be hurt during the upgrade to the CAAV for consideration before the authority makes the final decision, Thanh told the Ho Chi Minh City-based newspaper.

Vietnam province justifies controversial cable car project at world’s largest cave

Tourism authorities in the central province of Quang Binh have again defended a controversial plan to build a US$212-million cable car at Son Doong Cave, saying the media has misunderstood it.

A province tourism official told a meeting last week that the nearly 11-kilometer cable car system to be built by Da Nang-based real estate and resort developer Sun Group would be above the trees in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park and end 300-600 meters from the cave and not right at the entrance as the media reported.

The telpher would allow tourists to admire the landscapes from above, he added.

A plan first unveiled by Quang Binh authorities in last October envisaged the cable system ending inside Son Doong.

But a few weeks later authorities changed their description, saying it would link the cave with another cave called Tien Son.

But critics were not mollified and said it would still harm the environment.

Sun Group has not made any comment.

Quang Binh vice chairman Tran Tien Dung said at the meeting, held to promote the province’s tourism in Ho Chi Minh City, that the investor has done little except sending some foreign experts to do the environmental impact assessment for the project.

Sun Group is supposed to do many things to get approvals from government agencies and international organizations like UNESCO in order to undertake such a large project in a national park, he said.

The plan’s supporters have said the cable car would encourage more tourists to explore the cave.

Amid the controversy, the tourism ministry last November called on provincial authorities and the investor to do further research before embarking on the project.

Cave sells

Son Doong is now a big attraction with global media agencies and film studios taking interest in it, Dung said at the meeting, adding that though a tour there lasting just a few days costs up to US$3,000, it is fully booked until year end.

Nearly 2.75 million tourists visited the province last year, double the number from the year before.

Low-cost carrier VietJet Air plans to launch daily flights between Ho Chi Minh City and the Quang Binh’s capital Dong Hoi starting April 29, Thoi Bao Kinh Te Saigon Online reported, adding that the carrier is also planning to fly to the town from Hanoi.

State-owned Vietnam Airlines and another no-frills carrier, Jetstar Pacific are increasing their flights between HCMC and Dong Hoi, it said.

There is also a growing interest in Quang Binh among Hollywood filmmakers, according to the province’s tourism authorities and tour operator.

Nguyen A, chairman of Oxalis, the sole tour operator for Son Doong, said part of a new King Kong movie will be shot in Minh Hoa District and Tan Hoa Commune this year end.

Located in the UNESCO-recognized Phong Nha – Ke Bang, Son Doong was opened to tourists in 2013, four years after members of the British Cave Research Association finished their exploration and named it the world’s largest cave.

The five kilometer-long cave, which is 150 meters high and 200 meters wide, has at least 150 individual caves, a dense subterranean jungle and several underground rivers.

Saigon cruise operators sail to new dock in worries

After a two-and-half-month delay, the operators of tourist cruises and hydrofoils in Ho Chi Minh City announced that they are finally moving from a downtown wharf to a nearby dock on Tuesday.

The operators are worried that the forced relocation, to facilitate the renovation of the old wharf, will affect their business.

The new station is located at the Saigon Port in District 4, just more than one kilometer away from Bach Dang Wharf in District 1, news website Thoi Bao Kinh Te Saigon Online reported on Monday.

The city’s authorities initially ordered the operators to move out of the main tourist wharf by January 1 so they could close it for an upgrade.

But the deadline was later pushed to January 15 and then to the end of March, after the businesses complained that they had trouble in finding alternative docks.

The boat operators were quoted as saying in the news website that even though they have found the new home, they are worried that the adjustment will affect their business, because the dock’s location is not convenient.

Before the closure, Bach Dang was possibly the only place in the city where cruisers provided city river tours and river dining services. It was home to around 40 boats which served thousands of tourists a day.

Some service providers said they had operated at the wharf for more than 20 years.

Sigh of relief among travelers as Vietnam scraps plan for airport maintenance

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said it will not approve a proposal for the maintenance of Tan Son Nhat International Airport in a two-month period which may lead to thousands of passengers being grounded during the peak season.

Previously, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam submitted to the aviation authority a plan to fix the airport’s runways between April 10 and June 25.

The plan received negative reviews from some air carriers, which claimed huge losses caused by the cut of flights during the maintenance period, which falls in the peak season due to the summer vacation and a six-day holiday.

Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper reported on Tuesday that Vietnam will not go ahead with the plan.

This year Vietnamese will have a six-day holiday from April 28 to May 3 to celebrate Hung Kings’ Festival and pay tribute to the mythical founders of the nation, Reunification Day on April 30, and Labor Day.

According to the aviation authority, Tan Son Nhat International Airport would see around 80 flights cut and 10,000 passengers unable to fly each day if the repair was made.

A number of major airports, including Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, will undergo repairs between April and June, and the number of flights will be reduced as a result, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has announced.

They will fix their runways between April 10 and June 25.

According to the CAAV, Tan Son Nhat International Airport will see around 80 flights cut and 10,000 passengers unable to fly each day due to the maintenance.

Annually, the number of airline passengers who go on summer vacation increases by 20-30 percent between May and July.

This year Vietnamese will have a six-day holiday from April 28 to May 3 due to Hung Kings’ Temple Festival to pay tribute to the mythical founders of the nation, Reunification Day on April 30 and Labor Day.

An estimated one million booked passengers will be unable to fly during the maintenance period.

It is expected to cause a loss of VND120 billion (US$5.57 million) for the airports and VND1.5 trillion ($69.6 million) for carriers.

A good place to eat and shoot the breeze

If you have a penchant for buffets and are looking to have your fill of dishes from several parts of the world in an ambience that also facilitates reunions, Nguyen Thanh Ha has a recommendation to make.

I seem to have developed a taste for buffets, especially when meeting friends after a long time.

When Hoang Chien called and said he’s back after a mission abroad and would like to meet at a good restaurant with a good view, I considered a few options and decided on Su Buffet, which is in downtown Ha Noi. It has a nice view of the beautiful Thien Quang Lake and is surrounded by quiet streets.

When we arrived at the restaurant, several keepers quickly helped us park our motorbikes and several young girls guided us to a private corner, as we’d asked. We were happy with the spot. It was in a corner, but convenient to go around and get our food.

Japanese treats: A variety of sushi dishes at Su buffet.

The restaurant is not very big, but the buffet is a large one with an abundance of Asian and European dishes. Seafood enthusiasts are in for a treat with fried shrimps, boiled cuttlefish, sushi or sashimi salmon.

We took our seat and began with a hot chicken sweetcorn which was delicious.

“A very good starter,” Chien pronounced.

Su Buffet Restaurant

Add: 64 Nguyen Du Street, Hoan Kiem, Ha Noi

Tel: 04 39413338

Hotline: +84964388844

Opening hours: 9:00am-10:30pm

Price range: VND298,000-338,000 (US$15-17)

Comments: Good and abundant sorts of foods. Su Buffet helps increase appetising.

I went around with my plate. The salmon sashimi looked fresh and tasty, but the sushi looked cold, and the bread with butter and garlic and fried cheese did not look very inviting.

A fried shrimp, a piece of fried beef, a small bowl of Japanese seaweed and a small dish of salad were on my plate when I returned to our table.

The salad, with its sour-sweet tinge created by fresh, raw mango was very tasty and whetted my appetite. I decided to go for another salad helping, recommending it to Chien and other friends. They tried it and agreed it was very good.

As Chien and friends caught up with each other, I went over the Vietnamese traditional food section where bun cha, bun thang andpho were offered. The broths were so fragrant that I stopped and spent some time struggling over what I would order. Buffet, it might be, but there was no way I could try more than one of the soups, at my age. I wished I was younger, lean and hungry.

Finally I decided to ask a young girl behind the counter to make me a bowl of bun oc. I told her that I was nearly full, so I need only a small bowl. However, it has to be hot, I stressed.

“Don’t worry, the broth is boiling. You will be pleased,” she said, asking me if I would like some mam tom (shrimp paste) with it. I did not.

She was right. The broth was hot, and the snail was fresh and crisp. Along with the perilla, onions and tomato, the dish was delicious.

A few minutes after I rejoined the conversation, a few waiters invited us to try salmon with passion fruit and a bowl of cordyceps roberti (a parasitic fungi).

Mouth-watering sight: Abundant and attractive food at Su Buffet.

Next time, we said. We were full, and there was dessert waiting.

I chose a Thai pudding because I’ve found it cools down my system, but our friends opted for nep cam (violet glutinous fermented rice).

Chien enjoyed this immensely, praising the fragrance and the “drunkenness” of the rice.

“I missed this so much. In all my years abroad, this was the dish I could never get.”

On that happy note, we decided enough was enough. If you are feeling hungry, yet want to eat in leisurely fashion with a lot of conversation, Su Buffet is likely to fit your bill. — VNS

An East-West exchange in martial arts

Packing a punch: Martial art master Nguyen Quang Dung (right) teaches a foreign student. The school now has some 100 trainees from all walks of life, including policemen, soldiers, state employees, businesspeople, teachers and school students. — VNS Photo Trung Hieu

Gregoire Sevaz, 36, a freelance photographer from Paris, typically produces portraits and other works featuring gardens, interiors, still life and travel.

Beyond his profession though, Sevaz has a great passion for martial arts, particularly for Qi Gong, which he practices in France.

“In France, I don’t practise martial arts at a school; instead, I have a master, Evelyne Lichardy,” Sevaz said.

He arrived in Ha Noi earlier this month, having signed up for a short training course at the Viet Nam Hong Quyen Dao (VNHQD) School on 220 Hang Bong Street, where he is being taught directly by the school’s founder, martial arts master Nguyen Quang Dung, whose style of teaching impressed Sevaz from the start.

“VNHQD is an eye-opening experience for me. Similar to my branch of martial arts, [the course taught at] VNHQD is focused on precision in execution. The basics seem to be the same; the main difference is in the physical contact, which is not found in Taichi and Qi Gong. You also have to crouch lower to the ground to assume the basic positions.

“I cannot compare VNHQD with other martial schools, but the teachings are generally the same, and attention, inspection and regular (daily) training are important,” he said.

Sevaz said the course had presented a good opportunity to learn from Master Dung.

“Meeting Master Dung meant a great deal to me, and I feel I was extremely lucky to have gotten this chance. There is a French expression, “la force tranquille”, which means “quiet strength”, and that’s what he has inspired in me.

“This course was an opportunity for me to discover Viet Nam through martial arts from a martial arts master himself. He gave me his precious time, which I didn’t think I would merit when I first arrived.

“He has already invited me to come back, which is the gift of the year to me!”

For his part, Master Dung expressed appreciation for Sevaz’s abilities.

“I tested his competence before teaching him. Sevaz has a strong constitution and all the suitable elements for a martial artist.

“He learned the techniques I taught very quickly. Generally, I’ve found that all the Western learners I’ve taught have followed logical thought patterns and have a very good approach to studying.”

Development story

VNHQD was inaugurated in 1985 on 220 Hang Bong Street. It was initially a dojo used to train family members and neighbours in traditional martial arts.

After 20 years of development, the dojo has been used by hundreds of martial arts coaches and learners.

It was officially recognised as a member of the Ha Noi Martial Arts Association on May 19, 2005, when it was called “Thieu Lam Hong Gia Quang Dung Dojo 220 Hang Bong”.

In 2009, its name was changed to “Viet Nam Hong Quyen Dao Martial Arts Dojo” (www.hongquyendao.vn).

On January 15, 2015, the UNESCO Culture and Sports Development Centre officially recognised the dojo as “Viet Nam Hong Quyen Dao School” and became its patron.

Over the course of its development, the school has welcomed and exchanged performances with many groups of foreign martial artists, including those from France, Poland, Hong Kong and Russia, as well as Spain.

The school’s representative, Chief Master Dung, has trained martial artists on exchange programmes from many countries, including France, Germany, Poland and China. An international level-two martial arts master from China’s Shaolin Tung Shan Academy, named Thu Hao, was also an exchange student at the school.

Masters, coaches and students from the Viet Nam Martial Arts Union in France attend annual exchange programmes to train at the school.

The school now has some 100 trainees from all walks of life, such as policemen, soldiers, state employees, and businesspeople, as well as teachers and primary or secondary school students.

“We implement our main principle: To study martial arts to enhance physical development and develop a good nature; and to maintain and develop the traditional martial arts culture,” Master Dung said.

Talking about the school, the UNESCO Culture and Sports Development Centre’s director, Vu Van Hong, said the VNHQD had been operating for a long time, earning many achievements along the way. He said the school had always been one of the leading institutes for traditional martial arts activities.

Secretary General of the Ha Noi Martial Arts Association Le Ngoc Quang said VNHQD had always attached a great deal of importance to preserving the national martial arts.

“The school’s members are very active in maintaining and developing traditional martial arts locally and abroad,” he said.

For Sevaz, his tour to Ha Noi has left quite an impression on him.

“The city looks like an ant colony (absolutely no offence intended), particularly around areas with food, at least in the area where I live. Traffic is heavy; even for a Parisian, it’s not that easy to cross the road. The food is tasty, but I need more time to experience the full range of the cuisine. The hospitality, even in a tourist-focused place, seems to be authentic.”

Talking about cooperation between different martial arts schools in France and Viet Nam, Sevaz said: “It’s more than co-operation; it seems like a family. My master Evelyne gave me his name [Dung], and I quickly made contact via Facebook, where I received a big ‘Yes’ to my request to practise under him and discover his style of martial arts.

“That was one more great experience that permitted me to grow and develop my mind and to become stronger, smarter and enriched.” — VNS

Ancient Buddhist, Hindu statues on show

At peace: A statue of the Buddha in Nguyen Anh Tuan’s collection.

Nguyen Anh Tuan, an antiques researcher and a member of the HCM City Antiques Association, has announced an exhibition for his biggest and most original statue collection, focussing on Buddhism and Hinduism.

Tuan said he had collected more than 50 ancient stone sculptures, dating back to between the 6th and the 11th century, in different provinces and cities, including An Giang, Dong Thap, Can Tho, Kien Giang and Tra Vinh. He had started collecting these since the end of the 1990s.

“Most of the statues were discovered by local residents, while digging canals and house foundations,” Tuan said.

Tuan’s collection also includes statues of the Buddha and the Goddess of Mercy in robes, with the statue’s posture that of deep religious contemplation or standing on a lotus-shaped pedestal. Some statues of Buddha’s head are carved with Ushnisha, which is a three-dimensional oval at the top of the head of the Buddha. It symbolizes his attainment of reliance on the spiritual guide.

Besides ancient sculptures related to Buddhism, the collection has more than 40 ancient Hindu sculptures, such as the idols of linga-yoni, Mukhalinga and the Harihara and Vishnu deities.

The Mukhalinga idol, which is 27cm in height and 10cm in width, has a cylindrical shape and is divided into three parts. The top part is carved into Shiva’s face, with a cloth headgear.

The middle section is an eight-sided cylinder, which is the symbol of Vishnu, who is a Hindu God and known as the Supreme God of Vaishnavism – one of the three principal denominations of Hinduism – and one of the three supreme deities of Hinduism.

The bottom section is a four-sided cylinder, which is the symbol of Brahma – the Hindu god of creation. This style of sculpting belongs to the 6th and 7th century.

The statue of Vishnu head, which is 30cm in height, was collected in the southern city of Can Tho. The statue has a young face with a slight smile and embossed pupils.

The statue has curly hair hanging down the temporals and has been dated to the 7th century.

The statue of Ganesa, one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon, is 39cm in height and 34cm in width. It is seen in the sitting position and has an elephant head and a human body. The elephant head has a long trunk; and the top of the trunk is placed in a bowl-shaped object.

The human body is portly with a big belly; the upper part of the body is bare, while the lower part has a skirt, whose length touches his ankle.

The statue of the Harihara idol, who is the combined deity form of both Vishnu and Shiva from the Hindu tradition, is 57cm in height and 23cm in width and was collected in the southern province of Tra Vinh.

The statue is wearing a cylindrical hat divided into two parts. The right part was carved with hair and some flowers. The left part has been left bare. A third eye was carved in the middle of the forehead.

The Kalki statue is 35cm in height and 23cm in width and has a horse head and a human body. The head has a four-stratum crown decorated with patterns of lotuses.

In Hinduism, Kalki is the final incarnation of Vishnu in the current Mahayuga, foretold to appear at the end of Kali Yuga, the current epoch.

Religious texts called the Puranas foretell that Kalki will be atop a white horse with a drawn and blazing sword. He is the harbinger of the end of time in Hindu eschatology, after which he will usher the Satya Yuga.

The statue of the Uma goddess is 30cm in height and 18cm in width. Her hair is twisted into a bun and is carved into the shape of a four-petal flower. Her ears are carved in the shape of flames. The statue has a pretty face and follows the sculpting style of the 11th century.

The Lakshmi statue is 79cm in height and 27cm in width. Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, love, prosperity (both material and spiritual), fortune, and is considered the embodiment of beauty.

She is the wife and active energy of Vishnu. Her four hands represent the four goals of human life considered proper in the Hindu way of life-dharma, kama, artha, and moksha. Her hair is twisted into a bun and she wears a crown and a silk ribbon.

The statue has a kind face and a smiling mouth. The upper body is covered with a thin silk material showing a full breasted figure. The lower body is covered in a dhoti, also known as mundu, pancha, mardani or veshti, which is the traditional men’s garment worn in the Indian subcontinent-known during the ancient times as “Bharat Barsha”.

Tuan said, “I hope to transfer the collection to a museum in the country for display and to serve residents’ demand for studying and contemplating the artefacts. At present, many individuals and domestic and international museums have expressed an interest in buying some parts of the collection.” — VNS
