A Vietnamese-Russian venture is increasing the frequency of its charter flight service between Russia’s capital city and a Vietnamese airport near the resort town of Nha Trang.

Russian-owned Pegas Touristik and its partner Anh Duong Company will add around six Moscow-Cam Ranh flights to its monthly schedule, starting this week, news website Thoi Bao Kinh Te Saigon Online reported on Sunday.

The service is operated by Russian-owned Nord Wind with Boeing aircraft.

Hoang Thi Phong Thu, chairwoman of Anh Duong, said even though the increase is not much, it is good news considering the market is still facing difficulties.

She also noted that the flights start from Moscow, which is home to big-spender tourists.

According to Thu, last month the number of flights dropped to 30-35, compared to about 120 flights a month during the peak season last year.

Despite the drop, Pegas Touristik still considers Vietnam along with Thailand, Egypt and Turkey as their important markets, she said.

The Pegas-Anh Duong partnership is among operators that reduced, or even suspended, their flights between Moscow and Cam Ranh like the state-owned Vietnam Airlines due to recent falls in Russian arrivals.

The website quoted official statistics as saying that more than 68,000 Russian tourists arrived in Vietnam over the first two months of this year, down 25.7 percent year on year.

Tour operators have been blaming Russia’s economic troubles and the weakening ruble.
