The historic Saigon Central Post Office is getting a new color, a shade of yellow much lighter than the one used to repaint the building late last year for the first time since the Vietnam War ended in 1975.

As of Saturday workers had finished painting the top right side of the building.

All 14 members of the city’s planning and architecture board had voted for the new paint for the 123-year-old building, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city’s downtown area.

The color was chosen out of eight shades of yellow suggested by the post office.

They were tested on parts of the three-story building, which was designed and built by Gustave Eiffel, the famous architect who created the Eiffel Tower in the French capital Paris.

The post office said the new paint job has been sponsored by a paint company.

Last December the building got a facelift, but the paint color chosen for it sparked off criticism from the public for being too gaudy and different from the original color.

The post office admitted it had jumped the gun in not seeking approval from the city government.
