Quang Binh exploits the tour of discovering Tien Cave

Currently, discovering Tien Cave includes 1 day tour, 2 days 1 night tour and tour succeeding visiting Tu Lan Cave in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. The tour will be exploited from November to the end of August next year (duration from September to October is the rainy season, so the tour is pause).

So, when joining in the tour, visitors not only have the opportunity to challenge themselves, but also admire the interesting beauty in Tien Cave.

Tien Cave was surveyed for the first time by British Caving Association in 1994 and now is officially put into exploiting to serve visitors. This is a dry cave connecting with Tu Lan Cave, but not belongs to Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.

Tien Cave has a total length of nearly 3km and consists of 2 branches: Tien 1 Cave and Tien 2 Cave. The entrance of the cave is quite wide with the height of nearly 70m and width of nearly 50m. Tien Cave has specially structure, including many parts with vaulted shape and height of 30-100m.

Because the cave is flooded in the flood season, the floor of the cave is covered by a layer of fine sand. Thanks to the sunshine lights into the cave, the plants grow well and create the colorful natural painting of Tien Cave.

Vietnamese airlines aspanspanly international standards for safety as global aviation industry exspanands

Advertorial – Safety is the most crucial factor for every airline. At a time when the aviation industry is growing rapidly all around the world, passengers need reassurance that they will enjoy a safe and comfortable journey.

Airlines in Southeast Asia and all across the globe are expanding their fleets and widening their destination networks on an annual basis. More people are traveling by air than ever before and passengers now have a wider variety of carriers to travel with. However, many would-be air travelers have also been discouraged by recent aviation accidents.

Obtaining an internationally recognized safety certificate is a must for arguably every carrier.

One of the most highly regarded safety certificates is the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), granted by the International Air Transportation Association (IATA).

A benchmark for global safety management in airlines, the IOSA was created in 2001 with an aim to assess the operational management and control systems of an airline. IOSA uses internationally recognized quality audit principles and is designed to conduct audits in a standardized and consistent manner.

To receive IOSA certification is a confirmation of an airline’s commitment to operating with maximum safety, which involves “a great deal of hard work and requires the significant commitment of people, time and resources,” according to Blair Cowles, IATA’s Asia-Pacific regional director for safety and flight operations.

Obtaining the IOSA is a must for any airline that wishes to become a member of the IATA, a trade association of the world’s airlines with 260 members, primarily major carriers.

Among airlines in Vietnam, new-age Vietjet has quickly emerged as a leading player by managing to obtain the IOSA in just over three years of operations.

Vietjet"s new and modern aircraft

Vietjet’s managing director Luu Duc Khanh acknowledges that the aviation industry has been growing faster and faster across the Asia region and all around the world in terms of fleet expansion, flight network development, and rising passenger and cargo transportation capacity over recent years, so ensuring safety is essential for all airlines.

Vietjet boasts an impressive technical reliability ratio of 99.49 percent and the airline announced earlier this month that it had received the internationally recognized safety certificate from IATA.

Vietjet said such an accomplishment marked a new leap in its development path and was a hugely significant achievement for passengers on both domestic and international flights.

“The IOSA certification proves that Vietjet’s top priority is flight safety,” Khanh said. “With our commitment to complying with world-class safety and security standards, we expect to bring our clients safe, comfortable, joyful and friendly flights.”

Besides granting the IOSA, the IATA also works to ensure that the aviation infrastructure and the administrative and operational systems of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Vietnam, are capable of meeting demand for investment and development of airlines, according to Cowles from IATA.

Cowles said Vietjet currently possesses a fleet of modern aircraft so Vietnam’s aviation infrastructure must also be upgraded to ensure the most effective use of these planes.

A top Vietnamese transport official has also encouraged Vietjet to invest in aviation infrastructure development, and is confident that it can do so effectively.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Transport has recently submitted a proposal to the government calling for the mobilization of investment from the private sector to upgrade the country’s aviation infrastructure, according to Deputy Minister Nguyen Nhat.

“Vietjet has good experience in business administration, so it will surely make good use of the aviation infrastructure when joining the ministry’s program,” the deputy minister said at a ceremony where Vietjet was granted the IOSA certification earlier August.

“Vietjet should consider investing in aviation infrastructure to create a complete chain of services to better serve its passengers.”

Vietnam, in economic reform drive, eases foreign ownershispan caspans on some stocks

Long-awaited new rules allowing foreigners to take bigger stakes in Vietnamese equities took effect on Tuesday, but confusion over which sectors are eligible could dim their investor appeal.

The move to allow foreign shareholdings of up to 100 percent in some firms, versus the previous 49 percent ceiling, is one of the most liberal measures yet adopted as Vietnam pursues broad economic reform.

Vietnam is also bidding to have its VN Index included in MSCI"s emerging market index, increasing its appeal to a wider range of investors.

The VN Index is the only Southeast Asia gauge to have gained this year and "stands out in Asia", investment advisor Marc Faber, writer of the Gloom, Boom & Doom Report, told CNBC recently.

But with the government yet to provide detailed guidance on which sectors are restricted and which will be opened, investors say Vietnam"s "grand opening" is unlikely to raise pulses.

Le Anh Tuan, chief investment officer at Dragon Capital, said foreigners won"t jump in yet.

"Foreign investors only care when the new rules are actually implemented, not a promise to implement," he said.

The delay in raising the foreign ownership ceiling has frustrated investors keen to tap Vietnam"s potential. Now they must contend with rules that appear complex, vague and could cause regulatory overlaps with sector-specific legislation, banking for example.

Except sectors carrying conditions on foreign investments, the decree says full foreign ownership is allowed in areas Vietnam has committed in unspecified international agreements to liberalising – unless subject to other laws.

In a research note, Vietnamese fund Dragon Capital said the easing of restrictions would effectively be staggered while regulators classify dozens of sectors, muddied by multilateral trade deals under negotiation.

But where there"s clarity, there have been big gains.

Shares in top insurer BaoViet Holdings soared 65 percent over a two-week period in July to a high of over three years after the finance minister said insurers would have no foreign ownership ceiling.

Top broker Saigon Securities Incorp climbed 6.64 percent on Friday after the State Securities Commission (SSC) confirmed it could remove foreign limits.

Vietnam economy to undergo sea changes after EU trade spanact takes effect

Vietnam has agreed to drastically change its economic structure, including the elimination of uncompetitive firms and the refinement of a new generation of businesses, when choosing to enter a free trade agreement (FTA) with the EU, a German expert has said.

Some people are concerned about the fate of Vietnam’s small- and medium-size enterprises as cheaper European goods may be imported into the Southeast Asian country in huge amounts after the Vietnam-EU trade pact takes effect, Erwin Schweisshelm, chief representative of Germany’s Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Institute in Vietnam, said at a seminar in Ho Chi Minh City last week.

As a side effect of the economic integration game, only firms with ample capital resources and quality products or services can survive, whereas incompetent companies will have to exit the market, Schweisshelm remarked at the seminar on the legal perspective of the Vietnam-EU FTA on August 27.

Meat imports from the EU into Vietnam will compete with the local livestock industry so enterprises operating in the sector must try to survive, or they will be forced to go bankrupt in trying to do so, leaving only the fittest to make it through, he said.

The Vietnam-EU pact is the first such agreement that the union has ever signed with any Asian countries, and it is seen as the benchmark for other FTAs the bloc will clinch with other trade partners in the future, according to Schweisshelm.

Vietnam and the EU on August 4 reached agreement in principle for a free trade pact after concluding many sessions of negotiations from June 2012 to August 2015, with a view to ensuring an effective environment for trade and investment relations.

The in-principle trade deal includes the elimination of nearly all tariffs, at over 99 percent, for the two sides, in which Vietnam will liberalize the tariffs over a 10-year period and the EU will do so over a 7-year period.

The agreement, which is expected to take effect from the end of next year, also covers non-tariff barriers to trade and other trade-related aspects such as public procurement, regulatory issues, competition, services, investment, intellectual property rights, and sustainable development.

Accordingly, 99 percent of import tariffs between Vietnam and the EU will be abolished and about 65 percent of Vietnamese goods exported to the union will be entitled to tax exemption rights after the agreement enters into force, Schweisshelm said.

Agricultural and aquatic products, garment-textile and footwear shipments from Vietnam will be the biggest beneficiaries, as their exporters will be exempt from all import taxes within the maximum time frame of seven years.

But what the EU really wants when giving such incentives to Vietnamese goods is the real improvement in the production of those products, the increment of Vietnamese firms’ capacity, and their higher position in the global supply chain, the German representative added.

One of the measures introduced via the FTA to accelerate the progress is the strict rule of origin, he said.

"For example, for garment and textile products, the rule of origin consists of two phases, including that the sewing process must be done in Vietnam,” he said.

“But this is easier to meet than the ‘yarn forward rule of origin’ that the U.S. requests in its FTA negotiations with Vietnam,” he said.

The textile and dyeing sector of Vietnam has not developed so the country has to import materials from other countries in the region such as China.

So as to get rid of the dependence on imports from China, Vietnamese firms must roll up sleeves and begin to engage in the making of those materials so that the final products will be entitled to tax cuts when entering the EU, Schweisshelm said.

Establishing joint ventures with foreign companies, like the way local textile companies are working with Chinese or Hong Kong investors on building material production areas in Vietnam, in order to meet the provisions of the FTA is a feasible solution, Dr. Truong Minh Huy Vu, director of the Center for International Studies under the Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, said at the seminar.

In 2014, the EU constituted one of the most important overseas markets for Vietnam after the U.S., closely overtaken by the U.S. by only US$500 million.

With $27.9 billion, the EU purchased as much as 18.6 percent of Vietnam"s global exports last year, according to official figures.

In particular, the continuous surplus of $19 billion that Vietnam enjoys in its bilateral commercial links with the EU has significantly helped offset the country"s huge trade deficit with China, leading to an estimated global trade surplus of about $2 billion for the Southeast Asian nation.

“Through the exchange we hope to create a better sense of ASEAN as a regional identity for tourism, trade and investment,” said Van Thi Le Hien, wife of the Vietnam Ambassador to Malaysia, an emcee at the event.

The president of the association, Phongsamouth Anlavan, in turn said meaningful exchanges like these help to bridge the cultural gap that exists between the countries of ASEAN, thereby contributing to a healthier regional identity.

In addition, Anlavan applauded those in attendance for their active support in raising funds and other relief efforts to help victims of the massive flood in Malaysia and those who suffered as a result of Nepal’s earthquake.

"At the end of its epic journey through the heart of Indochina, the coffee-brown Mekong River splits, sloshing seawards through Vietnam. A pocketful of dong still goes a very long way in this delta region, and although the fertile plains and waterways are a riot of vivid colours and flavours, with endless opportunities for exploring by motorbike and boat, the area still sees surprisingly few foreign tourists," the guide said.

Others include Thailand, Egypt, South Africa, Uruguay, Cuba, Gambia, Prague in the Czech Republic, Greece and Guatemala.

Central Highlands Pleiku Airport to reopen from September 1

Earlier, flights to and from Pleiku Airport were halted from March 15, 2015 as the airport’s major facilities were being upgraded to be capable of receiving larger aircrafts.

The two-phase upgrade project began last September at a cost of VND945 billion (US$43.3 million). In its second phase, the airport was closed temporarily for over six months due to construction works on its runway.

The runway was enlarged from 36 metres in width to 45 metres and from 1,830 metres in length to 2,400 metres in order to accommodate A321, Boeing 737 and other aircrafts of the same size.

In addition, the terminal was renovated to serve up to 600 passengers during peak time.

At present, only the national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines is using the airport, with flights arriving from Ha Noi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City.

In the future, two low-cost airlines VietJet Air and Jetstar Pacific will also operate services to and from the airport.

‘New" surfing sport set to make big waves on My Khe beach

Visitors can undergo the SUP experience for one hour, where they can learn the basics of the sport, the material and right techniques, and practice on the pristine beach during the vacation.

Portugal"s Cabrito, who is a certified surf instructor from ISA (International Surfing Association), which is unique in Viet Nam, has opened the surfing school with the aim of developing the surfing scene in the city and Viet Nam, after working for more than 25 years as a lifeguard and surfer.

He said he wanted to introduce a healthy lifestyle and surfing culture in the local community and educate the local people about dealing with the dangers of the sea.

"Da Nang provides amazing conditions for learning surfing as well as developing the skill further. We want to introduce a new sport, SUP, in the city," he said.

Gonzalo said SUP is like surfing, but with a larger board, where people use a paddle and waves are not required.

The 40-year-old said he married Thu Nguyen, an international violist, after meeting her five years ago in Portugal.

"She was working in the best orchestra in Portugal. When she visited my large restaurant there, I saw her for the first time and fell in love. She was so beautiful and sweet, speaking Portuguese like I speak Vietnamese now, very funny. She kept visiting my restaurant. She loves Portuguese food. We became friends, and then lovers, after a few months. It was a beautiful period of our lives, living together in Portugal," Gonzalo said.

He said his wife went to work in Brazil, so he sold his restaurant to follow his love.

He said they lived in Qatar after their marriage, but didn"t like it much. So they decided to come to Viet Nam and try to do something different.

Surfing dream

Gonzalo said his wife had been living outside Viet Nam for more than 20 years and wanted to return as she missed the country and her father now was 86 years old.

"I always had dreamed of working on the beach and surfing all day. So, we travelled all over Viet Nam to decide where to open a surf school," he said.

"My wife is from Ha Noi, but we choose Da Nang, the most beautiful city in Viet Nam with its people, food, river and beaches.

"Many people advised us not to go to Da Nang as not many foreigners were there, and suggested we should go to Hoi An or Nha Trang instead. Eventually, we decided to stay in Da Nang as we fell in love with the beach city."

He said he could teach Vietnamese people to surf. It is not difficult if the people love the sport and the beach.

Gonzalo said his wife was staying in Ha Noi as she couldn"t find opportunities to play in concerts in Da Nang, and that she was the leader of Apaixonado Quartet in the capital city.

He said his wife was opening a music school for autistic kids and planned to open a similar school in Da Nang too.

"We are going to teach the kids and adults how to surf and how to understand the ocean. They will understand the dangers, how to avoid them, and how to react if they are in a difficult situation," he said.

"I will not teach lifeguard techniques, just the dangers of the sea, the way the water moves in My Khe beach, where you can be and should not be, the safety rules, as well as ways to overcome difficult situations," he added.

"I won"t hesitate to rescue anybody in danger. I saw one rescue here in My Khe beach by the local lifeguards. They did a very good job and quickly too. I was at the beach, ready to jump into the water," he said.

He said My Khe beach was perfect as it had waves for nine months of the year, while in Portugal, people surfed in winter too in waters of 13 degrees Celsius.

He said he was learning the Vietnamese language and that people in Da Nang would get surprised to hear him speak their language.

"They smile when they try to teach me and we end up laughing always. It is so funny. My wife is always surprised to see my progress in learning tieng Viet (Vietnamese language).

"When she asks ‘where do you learn," I say ‘in the street". Everybody teaches me. I can go alone to any restaurant in the street and to buy things from the market. People in Da Nang always understand me.

"I love Vietnamese food and I am crazy about banh xeo (pancake), my quang (locally made rice noodles with pork and shrimp) for breakfast. I love to have com tam (broken rice) for lunch. Fruit are unbelievable here, so many varieties and delicious too. I love to have iced coffee without sugar," he said.

"People in Da Nang are very friendly and always try to help me. I feel like I am home. I really feel very excited when my wife comes to Da Nang.

"Come to the surfing school at My Khe beach," he offered. "I will teach you how to surf."

Southern spanrovince to have 5-star hotel shaspaned into traditional Vietnamese musical instrument

A Vietnamese firm has secured the green light from officials in southern Vietnam to build a five-star hotel in the shape of a musical instrument used in don ca tai tu, a form of traditional Vietnamese music recognized by UNESCO.

Construction of the Bao Toan hotel will start next month in Bac Lieu City, which is the capital of the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu, the cradle of don ca tai tu, according to Ngo Xuan Pha, chairman of Bao Toan Automobile JSC, the developer of the project.

Don ca tai tu is a genre of chamber music in the traditional music of southern Vietnam.

The architectural design of the 5-star hotel has been approved by the provincial Party Committee and People"s Committee, Pha told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Saturday.

Upon completion, the hotel will have 16 stories and be 50 meters in height.

According to the developer, the proposed hotel will cost some VND140 billion (US$6.3 million) and include five floors designed in the shape of a boat carrying the main part of the project that is shaped into the don kim, a two-cord musical instrument used in don ca tai tu.

The hotel will have two elevator systems designed as the two ‘strings’ of the don kim with the top end to feature an observatory and a coffee lounge.

Don ca tai tu was recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity in early 2014, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

The Vietnamese music genre was selected as one of the 11 new inscriptions on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the 8th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage, held in Azerbaijan on December 5, 2013.

Stemming from the Hue court music and folk music of the southern region, don ca tai tu has been developing since the 19th century, changing according to local taste. It thrived in the early 20th century and remains crucial to the country’s traditional culture.

The music is typically performed at festivals, death anniversary rituals, and celebrations by farmer-artists.

Fatfish: an ocean of seafood, smoked meat

Appetising: Pizza is made for a special occasion for gastronomers at Fafish Restaurant &Lounge Bar.

Da Nang’s Fatfish restaurant offers a spectacular view of the river and two bridges, a unique, pool-inspired design and beautifully presented meats. Hoai Nam reports.

Facing the Han River, Fatfish Restaurant and Lounge Bar always has some cool air blowing, the sun shining and beautiful landscape.

Gastronomers can hardly find a place more picturesque with the Rong (Dragon) and the rotary Han bridges spanning over the river in Da Nang city.

Decorated with natural furniture and bamboo- decorations, the restaurant features an ocean of fish and the bar in the centre emerges as a ship deck.

The restaurant was designed as a pool with fish patterns on the walls, tables, staircases. Visitors can seat and imagine that they are in a pool with fish swimming around.

The restaurant owner intentionally use fish and bamboo decoration in almost all corners of the three-storey building.

Fatfish smells of Mediterranean/Asia fusion with dishes prepared by two chefs, one Italian and one Vietnamese.

While it’s called Fatfish, it doesn’t only serve fish, but different varieties of main dishes of pork, duck and beef with funny names.

“We decorate this cool place for gastronomers in the evening when it becomes pleasant in this central region on a hot summer day. The restaurant is sandwiched by the Han and Dragon bridges, so visitors can find outdoor tables or sit on the balcony enjoying delicious food, savouring it with the river sunset view,” Matthew Reeves, the restaurant owner, said.

“Our chefs try to cook with standard imported food and some local vegetables and spices. We also hope to attract more Vietnamese young connoisseurs who are looking for some enjoyable food and a romantic place to have a drink,” Reeves said.

Fatty and flavourful: Pork belly is one of diners’ favourite smoked meats to order at Fatfish.

He said there are two chefs, the Italian chef, Alberto Colombo, and the Vietnamese chef, Duc Tran, owner of Mango Mango, Mango Rooms and Mai Fish restaurants in Hoi An.

One of the quintessential dishes the restaurant serves is one with a rather funny name – Lazy Pig – a house seasoned pork cutlet with homemade tagliatelle sundried tomatoes and seasonal vegetables.

The restaurant owner said Lazy Pig is a Japanese pork chop, pan seared with the Vietnamese chef’s secret recipe and served with Colombo’s homemade tagliatelle pasta and his special tomato sauce.

“It’s a funny and cool name. It tastes smoke pork with sauce and hand-made spaghetti in Italian style of the senior Italian chef,” Nguyen Thi Hao Quynh of the restaurant said explaining the dish.

“The Italian chef rolls spaghetti and cuts it before drying it under the sun. The formula keeps spaghetti a bit tough, but soft and delicious with slices of smoked pork,” Quynh said.

“The dish depicts the fat of smoked meat and balances the mixture of vegetable and sundried tomatoes.”

The pork is very tender.

Reeves also suggested that visitors can also order Fatfish Da Nang signature pizza.

Naughty Duck is actually a fine cuisine with smell of burnt pulp coconut and charcoal smoke.

The chef sauteed duck breasts on a pan, smoked with charcoal and pulp coconut.

Naughty Duck is very Vietnamese with five spices and galangal but served with Japanese style noodles.

Both dishes have interesting and quirky names to attract customers, according to Reeves.

Red snapper and grouper are two kinds of best quality fish. The restaurant owner explains that the fish cuisine is very delicious and spicy, and gastronomers image they are flying after tasting the food.

Local fishermen in Da Nang must catch the fish early in order for the chef to make fresh fish.

Comment: Well-decorated with bamboo shaped fish. Flooded with light and offers a river view.

The pan seared fish fillet, is served with penne, tomato sauce and fresh aromatic herbs and vegetables.

“Spicy ingredients cooked with fresh fish fillets could make you fly like fish. The deliciously cooked and attractively displayed dish would make any gastronome’s mouth water,” Reeves said.

“Newly caught fish in Da Nang always lends the best quality to the Italian-Vietnamese cuisine cooked with home-grown herbs and vegetables.”

Reeves said the main dish can be used with wine or HCM City-based Pasteur Street Brewing Company draught beer. We have a jasmine IPA and a Saison brewed with Phu Quoc pepper and lemongrass. They go great with our pizzas,” he offered.

“It’s a lovely smell with Jasmine IPA. It is very strong with 6.5 alcohol percentage, and you would get drunk with just three glasses. Tired of the same old uninspired vegetarian options? Come to Fatfish.”

Hannah Aiello, an Australia expat in Hoi An, said: “This place is superb. The food was delicious and beautifully presented and the staff were very friendly and attentive.”

Van Ly, who is from the US but is living in HCM City, said: “I had a lovely early dinner at Fatfish one weekend. I tried the fat tuna appetiser and the four cheese pizza.”

“The crust on the four-cheese pizza was crispy on the outside with the right amount of salt and chewiness, and the consistency of the four-cheeses was creamy and it melted in my mouth. It’s so good. I also enjoyed the Pasteur Street Brewing Company’s Saigon Saison beer on offer. All in all, it was a wonderful meal with great friends. Once that boardwalk opens up, the river view will also be superb.”

Reeves said the restaurant, which has been introduced in the city, is a good choice to take families, friends and couples to for a romantic dinner on a Saturday or a Sunday.

He said clients can relax on Sunday night with delicious food and drinks when they can see the head of the dragon (of the Dragon Bridge) breathing fire around 9.30pm on Sunday.

The restaurant can be easily found on the east side of the Han River bank. It opens from 9am with coffee and cakes, and closes at 11.30pm. — VNS

Residents of Hue’s Thuy Thanh Village are taking advantage of the burgeoning tourism industry to improve their lives. Vu Hao reports

In Thuy Thanh Village, tourists are captivated by the tile-roofed ancient Thanh Toan Bridge, which is no less famous than the ancient Truong Tien Bridge of Hue.

Built in 1776 by the sixth descendant of the Tran royal family Tran Thi Dao, the bridge bears a unique wooden structure: “house above, bridge below”. It has seven compartments, while the roof is made of crystal gem tiles. Thanh Toan is said to be the rarest, most artistic and most valuable of all ancient bridges in Viet Nam.

Along with the biennial Hue Festival, Thuy Thanh Village also organises the rural market festival, which re-enacts the atmosphere of an ancient market with sales and purchases and display of agricultural products, arts and crafts.

Travellers are invited to try traditional Hue dishes such as mussel rice and vermicelli. At night, the local people interact with tourists in art performances.

In Thuy Thanh, tourists also observe with appreciation elderly farmers present farming activities, which look quite simple but are, in fact, inspiring. Activities such as husking, ploughing and singing lullabies to children are the most favourite ones of travellers.

Tran Thi Dieu, Nguyen Thi Kinh and Nguyen Thi Hai are three of the most outstanding farmers who have successfully made a mark in the tourism industry in their twilight years, and have amazed travellers. Not only that, they have found ways to make the most of household chores.

Dieu, who speaks good English, said, “Farmers who are able to speak one more language have more advantages and make more money in tourism. So I’m trying to improve my English, though I am not young any more. It is great when I can practise with foreign travellers and they understand me. Knowing how to speak another language makes me more cheerful, and foreigners are more interested.”

Part of the festival market for many years, the village has become a must-visit for tourists each time they visit Hue City.

According to a recent survey by the city, more travellers visit Thuy Thanh than other ancient villages such as Phuoc Tich, Kim Long, Vy Da and Thuy Bieu, besides Bao Vinh, as this village tops the Hue Festival tourism list.

Tran Duy Khanh, chairman of the Thuy Thanh People Committee, said various English classes have been organised so that local people can communicate with tourists, while offering local food and doing gardening.

“Community tourism is a new kind of business that draws tourists and is becoming a trend. In 2014, the number of travellers to Thuy Thanh was 1,000, which rose to more than 6,000 at the beginning of this year. Our village is honoured to be selected as the ideal destination in the ‘Sustainable and Responsible Tourism’ project in the central region,” Khanh said.

“Since the day we join the project, we have focused on developing tourism products, adding more exhibits to museum, along with promoting tourist communication and developing social networks and forums to improve Thuy Thanh’s traditional and modern images, so that we are known everywhere.” — VNS

Children with bone disease find relief

Addressing ailments: Ton That Hung (centre) and a doctor examine an OI child after she was given a crocodile gel treatment. — VNS Photo Le Minh

A Crocodile Village in HCM City is using glue made from crocodile bones to treat an untreatable disease often found in children

Osteogenesis Imperfacta (OI) is a disease for which medical science worldwide does not have any effective treatment but in the Sai Gon Crocodile Village in HCM City’s District 12, caretakers can do so, and are actually doing it.

The story began when Ton That Hung, director of the Lilac Crocodile Company and deputy head of the Xuan Loc Agriculture Co-operative, happened to read an article on OI children, which aroused a lot of compassion in his heart.

“I thought a lot about the OI children and wanted to find a way to rescue them. I tried to seek out books and documents to read and at the same time exchanged views with medical experts in Arthritis and Musculoskeletal.

“Finally, I found that one of most important things that led to OI was lack of collagen,” said Hung, adding that his research on the Internet told him that collagen is available in crocodile’s bones.

Since 2005, the Sai Gon Crocodile Village has been trying to take full advantage of the crocodile bones that contain collagen and cook these into the form of a gel. Doctors at the HCM City’s Traditional Medicine Institute (HTMI) said they used the gel to treat osteomalacia patients and it proved effective, compared with other medicines, Hung said.

“I thought the gel might treat OI patients too,” he said.

Three years ago, he travelled to the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Ben Tre to bring an OI patient, 11-year-old Le Thi Xuan Quyen, to his village for treatment.

At that time, both of Quyen’s legs were bent so much that she could neither sit nor stand on her own.

Hung and doctors from the HTMI were trying to treat her through four-method treatment.

These included medicine (crocodile gel in combination with medicinal herbs), doing exercises (guided and trained by medical workers), food and psychological treatment.

Dr Tran Van Nam of the HTMI said for children with OI, the psychological part is the most difficult because almost all of them are so frail that they find it difficult to move or to have any contact with a stranger. They are also very afraid of water.

Thanks to doctors and assistants from the village like Hung, Quyen overcame psychological issues and forced herself to do exercises and drink crocodile gel.

As a result, her broken bones came to be joined together after a four-week treatment, leaving people very astonished.

He recalled that when Quyen was brought to the village, X rays clearly showed signs of bones being broken while this changed after four weeks of treatment.

“We all thought that the new X ray was wrong because the signs of broken bones had disappeared,” said Hung, adding that now, she can even swim like an ordinary child her age.

Nguyen Ngoc Van, who teaches swimming at the village, recalled it is an exploit for an OI child to know how to swim well.

“During the initial days, people had to bring the OI children to relax at a swimming pool for them to become familiar with water and then allow them to splash water upon each other and then gradually encourage them to swim,” said Van.

Asked how hard it was to help the children learn swimming, Van said, “I have my own secret of how to teach children in such a way that in the course of a few hours, they learn to swim. Of course, first they have to wear a lifebuoy.”

Van is a local citizen at the district. Every day he teaches swimming to OI patients at the village without charging any money.

“Hung wanted to pay me but I told him that just as he does charity work, why should I not do the same? I thought my life will have more significance if I help OI children swim,” he said.

The first OI child, Nguyen Van Trung, 13, from the central province of Ha Tinh, was being operated in HCM City’s Minh Anh Hospital in 2013 after being treated under four-treatment programme at the village.

Hung said, “We were all anxious and tense because it was the first time an OI patient was being operated upon.”

“Thanks to the experienced doctors and leading arthritis and musculoskeletal experts, Trung’s operation proved to be a complete success because he could now walk,” said Hung.

After the operation, Hung was invited to the US to report about the treatment that involved use of crocodile gel. This astonished the US doctors because they said the world still lacks any effective method to deal with this disease.

Hung’s effort paid off when his patient, Le Thi Thu Huynh, 12, could walk on her own feet.

Huynh is a native of the central province of Quang Ngai. She has been afflicted with OI ever since her birth and could not walk.

In 2012, she was brought to Hung’s village for treatment. After two years and two operations, Huynh was able to stand and walk.

“I’m so happy to be able to walk 12 years after being born. It’s a great gift in my life,” Huynh said.

OI, particularly osteomalacia, has threatened humans since long. Instance of this disease have been rapidly increasing in the world. By 2000, more than eight million people faced this disease in the US and every 30 seconds, a person in Europe faces this disease.

In Viet Nam, the number of people afflicted with this disease could triple by 2030, compared to 15,000 cases in 2006, according to Professor Nguyen Van Tuan, an expert in osteomalacia.

There are many methods to deal with the disease such as supplementary calcium, vitamin D, testosterone or oestrogen and doing exercises but these methods are not as effective as the use of crocodile gel, said Dr Nam of the HTMI.

He said the institute will promote co-operation with the Sai Gon Crocodile Village to carry out more research into crocodile gel usage.

To date, more than 100 professional doctors dealing with OI and osteomalacia from various hospitals and medicinal units have co-operated with the village to treat OI patients.

The HCM City’s Children Hospital 2 is ready to offer free-of-charge operations for any OI children, said Hung.

More than 50 OI children are being treated at the village. They are from different provinces in the country, such as Nam Dinh, and Son La in the north. — VNS
