Vietnam Airlines calls off flights as ‘suspaner tyspanhoon' Dujuan closes in on Taiwan

National carrier Vietnam Airlines has canceled all flights between the country and Taiwan on Monday as ‘super typhoon’ Dujuan is closing in on the east coast of the island.

The Vietnamese airline, Taiwan’s China Airlines, and Eva Air scrapped all the Vietnam-Taiwan services on Sunday night as Dujuan, which is categorized by the Hong Kong Observatory as a "super typhoon" with gusts of 227 kilometers per hour, began swirling toward the island.

Vietnam Airlines said Monday it had adjusted the schedules of its Monday and Tuesday services to and from Taiwan for safety reasons.

There will be no Vietnam-Taiwan flights offered on Monday, according to the national flag carrier.

Alternatively, the Vietnam Airlines flight VN578 from Hanoi to Taipei, and the return flight coded VND579, has been rescheduled to take off on Tuesday, using the Boeing 777 aircraft instead of the Airbus A321.

The Vietnam Airlines flight VN570, previously scheduled to leave Ho Chi Minh City for Taipei at 4:50 pm on Monday, will take off at 8:30 am on Tuesday.

The return flight from Taipei, VN571, will depart at 2:00 pm on Tuesday (local time), instead of 7:45 am, according to the flag carrier.

Dujuan is gathering strength on its approach to the east coast of Taiwan, with landfall predicted around 11:00 pm (1500 GMT), according to AFP.

Torrential rains and high winds are forecast across the island from Monday afternoon, whereas evacuations were stepped up there.

"The whole of the island should heighten vigilance against severe winds and torrential rains," Taiwan"s Central Weather Bureau said in a statement.

Almost 3,000 people, most of them tourists, were evacuated from the popular attractions of Green Island and Orchid Island on Sunday, while around 4,000 more were moved Monday ahead of the storm, according to AFP.
