The necklaces of Co Tu men

The necklaces were made in various designs and are always put on by the elderly men during Tet (Lunar New Year holiday), wedding receptions, and other special occasions. Strings of agate in circular or oval shapes are their favorites. The agate beads usually come between fangs or manes of wild boars, bear claws, or small figures made of rare and valuable wood.

According to Co Tu ethnic minority people’s tradition, the beauty of necklaces and the length of fangs and claws show the positions of Co Tu men at their villages. As these valuable strings are considered part of their life, these jewelries will be buried with the owners when they die.

In the past, poor Co Tu men who did not have an agate necklace had almost no chance to marry young wives, said Dinh Van Bot, a 67-year-old patriarch at Ta Lau Village, Ba Commune in Quang Nam Province’s Dong Giang District. They had to tie the knot with widows or wait until they became rich to get married to young wives, and the first gift the men had to give their parents-in-law were strings of agate. On the contrary, a wealthy Co Tu man could marry a 15-year-old girl.

The 82-year-old patriarch Y Cong at Tong Cooi Village said in the past, agate was very valuable. It was the gift Co Tu men presented to their lovers and parents gave to their daughters on their wedding days. A bead of agate, which is called by locals “c’ron,” could cost a cow or a buffalo.

Things have changed, however. Nowadays, agate strings are merely symbolic gifts and can be bought at VND50,000 (US$2.28) per string of ten beads at markets. Some young couples of the ethnic minority group have started to give their better halves rings instead of such agate strings.

The Embassy of Vietnam in Kuala Lumpur has sent a diplomatic note to Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to oppose the recent illegal detention of a Vietnamese tourist, a newspaper reported.

The note said Malaysian authorities had wrongfully arrested the Vietnamese citizen and held her for six days inside an airport without sufficiently informing diplomatic agencies, Tuoi Tre quoted the embassy’s spokesperson To Thi Huong as saying.

This is not in compliance with the 1963 Vienna convention on diplomatic relations, she said.

The embassy also complained that Malaysian authorities had handcuffed the tourist even without evidence of her committing any crime.

This arrest could damage the image of Malaysia among Vietnamese tourists, the embassy said.

According to Tuoi Tre, the Vietnamese tourist, identified only as T, has been given a week off from her position at the Party unit of Ho Chi Minh City’s District 12 to recover from the incident.

The unit’s spokesperson, Le Van Cuong, said she joined a trip to Singapore and Malaysia from July 18-23, which was organized by Saigontourist for 61 Party staffers of the district.

On July 23, when she was about to leave Malaysia with the group, T was held at Kuala Lumpur International Airport after immigration officers suspected that the entry stamp on her passport was fake.

Her office in HCMC was notified of the arrest. They sent an email to the Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia on July 25 to ask for help.

The embassy said it only received the information on July 27.

“Embassy staffers went to the airport on July 27 and she returned to Vietnam on July 28. She cried a lot when seeing her family and colleagues at Tan Son Nhat Airport,” Cuong said.

He said that, during the six days, T was given food but she could not eat much and that the facilities “did not satisfy basic demands.”

Huong of the Vietnamese Embassy said her agency sent representatives to the Malaysian Immigration Department on July 27. However, they were only allowed to meet T the following day.

The department then said that it finished verifying the entry stamp and found that it was real, but did not issue any apology, she said.

The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pledged to work with the Department of Immigration on the case.

HCM CITY (Biz Hub) — Vietjet will increase the frequency of flights on its HCM City – Chu Lai route to seven return flights per week as of August 4, 2015, the airline announced.

The move aims to meet demand more efficiently and offer passengers increased convenience, the airline said on July 30.

With this increase, the HCM City-Chu Lai route will operate daily. With each leg taking approximately one hour and fifteen minutes, flights taking off from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City at 7:25am will arrive in Chu Lai at 8:40am. Return flights departing from Chu Lai at 9:15am will land in HCM City at 10:30am.

To help passengers in the central provinces of Quang Nam and Quang Ngai travel to Chu Lai airport, Vietjet also offers a free shuttle bus service. In Quang Ngai Province, the daily shuttle bus departs for Chu Lai airport at 6:30am from Cam Thanh hotel, Pham Van Dong Street, Quang Ngai City. The return shuttle stops at the direction boards in the pick-up area of the airport.

Meanwhile, in Quang Nam Province, the daily shuttle bus departs for Chu Lai airport at 8am from Phan Boi Chau Street, Tam Ky City. The return shuttle stops at the direction boards in the pick-up area of the airport.

“By offering greater convenience with daily flights on our HCM City–Chu Lai route and free shuttle buses, we aim to improve our overall service for passengers in the city and the two coastal provinces of Quang Nam and Quang Ngai,” Desmond Lin, Vietjet’s Director of Business Development, said. — VNS

HCM CITY (Biz Hub)— Tourism agencies in HCM City and the northern province of Quang Ninh are working closely to develop tours between the two localities, with a promise to launch new tourism products, tourism officials have said.

HCM City is a potential domestic tourism market for residents of Quang Ninh, as an increasing number of local residents have more disposable income, Trinh Dang Thanh, deputy director of Quang Ninh Province’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Department, said at a workshop held in HCM City yesterday.

In addition, many Vietnamese people living abroad have relatives in HCM City. When they visit, they often take domestic tours.

Domestic tourism would help curb the recent fall in international visitors to the country, Thanh added.

More than 60 per cent of travel companies and providers of tourism-related services such as hotels, restaurants and resorts have committed to cut prices by 20-40 per cent to encourage domestic tourism under the National Tourism Stimulus Programme.

Quang Ninh needs to focus its investment to attract more tourists from HCM City to local sites such as Quang Ninh Museum and hydroplane flight services, said Nguyen Thi Khanh, deputy chairwoman of HCM City’s Tourism Association

Quang Ninh has more than seven million visitors every year, including five million domestic visitors, according to the provincial Culture, Sports and Tourism Department.

However, the number of tourists from HCM City accounts for only seven per cent of the total number of domestic tourists to the province.

In June, HCM City and seven northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Hai Duong, Hung Yen and Lang Son signed a cooperative agreement for tourism development.

The agreement covered five main areas: tourism products, promotion campaigns, training of human resources, investment funds and tourism management. —VNS
