Vietnamese model brings her floating catwalk to River Seine

Vietnamese model Jessica Minh Anh presented an autumn collection on Thursday in a unique way, with a “floating catwalk” on the River Seine in Paris.

The model cum entrepreneur hosted the event, inviting a group of guests aboard the Seine’s giant glass boat to witness the stunning 100m catwalk. The multi-faceted glass windows gave the illusion of the models walking on water as the boat cruises. As a result, Paris landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Louvre, and the 37 famous bridges crossing the river became the backdrop for the catwalk.

Marco Goncalvez, Operation Manager of Compagnie des Bateaux Mouches, said: “We are extremely honoured to work with Jessica Minh Anh on this special project.

“We have been admiring her iconic productions at places such as the Grand Canyon Skywalk, Hudson River, London’s Tower Bridge, and One World Trade Center for years. It is a privilege to have our venue added in Jessica’s famous series of unconventional catwalks.”

Anh’s catwalk was the centrepiece of the J Autumn Fashion 2015 showcasing a range of labels, including Lebanese haute couture designer Rouba. G, Turkish talent GulnurGunes, Saudi Arabian fashion house OtKutyrAtulier, Peruvian artist Ani Alvarez Calderon, Kiwi heritage brand Iwi Creations, and 5.8.0 creative studio from Hong Kong.

In July 2015, Anh created the world’s first solar-powered catwalk. It followed her previous events at the Eiffel Tower in France, the Tower Bridge in London, One World Trade Center, Gardens by the Bays Skyway in Singapore, Petronas Twin Towers’ Skybridge in Malaysia.

She produced the world’s highest fashion show on the Grand Canyon Skywalk at 1,220m above the Colorado River.

Before the catwalk on the River Seine, she turned the Hudson River in New York into the world’s newest runways.

Talking about her unique runways, Anh said: “I believe the most outstanding designs should be showcased at the best of locations, using the most creative catwalk concepts. It’s a challenging process, but very rewarding.”

Anh, who was born in Ha Noi, Viet Nam but raised in Moscow, Russia, received formal training in piano and fine art before studying under a scholarship in Malaysia. The catwalk producer currently resides in Paris but travels internationally to produce three unique runways each year.

HCMC Premier – Opera Carmen

08 and 09 Nov 2015, 8 pm

HCMC Opera House

No. 7 Lam Son Square, D.1, HCMC

Georges Bizet’s opera CARMEN is one the most famous, successful and most performed operas in history. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy based on the Prosper Mérimée’s novel of the same name.

Opera CARMEN will be performed at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House on November 8th and 9th, 2015. Being a featured program in the 2015 performing season, the production is a great effort from HBSO. Leading the premiere performance is the French Maestro Patrick Souillot. The performance will also feature French opera artists Sophie Leleu and Olivier Trommenschlager in the roles of Carmen and Don Jose, respectively.

As HBSO has done with Mozart’s THE MAGIC FLUTE, the Ho Chi Minh City premiere of CARMEN will be presented in concert, with its emphasis on the musical aspect of the piece.

Performers in the production also include HBSO’s best opera artists such as Cho Hae Ryong, Mer. A. Tran Hong Vy, Pham Duyen Huyen, Pham Khanh Ngoc, Nguyen Thu Huong, Vo Nguyen Thanh Tam, Dao Mac, Phan Huu Trung Kiet… and the HBSO Choir and Symphony Orchestra.

This year, 2015, marks the 140th anniversary of the CARMEN’s debut as well as the 140th death anniversary of Georges Bizet, the opera’s composer. Bizet passed away suddenly 3 months after the debut of CARMEN and never got to experience its popularity and great success of the work. In 1938, on the celebration of Bizet’s 100th birthday, the Opéra-Comique theatre had had 2,271 performances of the opera. The work has enjoyed countless productions around the world and has inspired other works such as ballet, film, music suite…

Concert “Ludwig van Beethoven” at Goethe Institut in November

07 and 08 Nov 2015, 8 pm

Goethe-Institut Hanoi

56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi

This year, on the 245th birthday of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, the Goethe-Institut presents a four-part concert series at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi. The ten sonatas for violin and piano will be performed by the renowned musicians Nguyen My Huong and Dao Trong Tuyen.

On 7 and 8 November, the audience can enjoy three sonatas, including Sonata No. 5, which is widely known as the “Spring Sonata” due to its cheerful and hopeful mood.

However, it wasn’t Beethoven himself who came up with this name. In fact, his life was everything but easy when he finished the sonata in 1801: Beethoven had just found out that his hearing troubles were no temporary problem, but that he would go deaf. Other works which he composed during this time resonate his fear and despair about his fate.

Beethoven has brought the Classical form to its highest expressive level and he is considered as a pioneer of Romanticism. With his sonatas for violin, composed between 1797 and 1812, he was following his role model Mozart, who recognized the violin as an equal partner for the piano for the first time. Furthermore, Beethoven’s sonata are known for their unconventional modulations and rhythms, which first shocked the audience, but after a while it was seen as the own course of the great classic composer.

Around 200 years later you can experience this complete exceptional music cycle for the first time in Hanoi – an exceedingly occasion for lovers of music.

PROGRAM

– Sonata No. 1 in D major, Opus 12

– Sonata No. 3 in E-flat major, Opus 12

– Sonata No. 5 in F major, Opus 24

Nguyen My Huong studied at Hanoi Art School, Vietnam National Academy of Music with Professor Ngo Van Thanh as well as at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz with Professor Thomas Zehetmair. Currently, Nguyen My Huong works as a soloist in chamber music concerts with Vietnamese and foreign counterparts. She is second violin principal in the National Symphony Orchestra and teaches at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Moreover, she has received an offer to be concertmaster in Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dao Trong Tuyen studied with several prestigious piano teachers such as Hoang Vinh Huong, Hoang Hoa, Joel Pasquier, Professor Tran Thu Ha and Professor Đặng Thái Sơn. In 2007, he completed his Doctorate of Music in Piano Performance at the University of Montreal in Canada. Dao Trong Tuyen won the first prize in the National piano competition in 1990 and he has played concerts in Canada, France and Japan. “The Canterville Ghost” in Vietnam

Adapted from Oscar Wilde’s story

By Paul Stebbings and Phil Smith

Music: Paul Flush

Director: Paul Stebbings

Producer: Grantly Marshall

Hanoi: Tue 03 Nov 2015, 8 pm

Wed 04 Nov 2015, 11 am

Labor Theatre

HCMC: Thu 05 Nov 2015, 11 am

HCMC Conservatory of Music

In autumn 2015 we revive one of the company’s most popular productions for a tour of over twenty countries in Europe and Asia. “THE CANTERVILLE GHOST” is an enigmatic masterpiece from one of the greatest story tellers ever to set pen to paper: Oscar Wilde. Being Wilde this is a piece of razor sharp wit, vicious satire and imagery that is both Gothic and lyrical. TNT brings out the full complexity of the story, a story that is wrongly labelled as solely for the young. And of course we update the satire as Wilde was nothing if not contemporary (he seldom sets his work in the past).

The story is set in an English castle whose aristocratic owner, Lord Canterville, has put up for sale as he is as broke as he is noble. The resident crows object to this as strongly as the resident Ghost (the wife murderer Sir Simon de Canterville). A brash and wealthy American family arrives to take possession of the castle: a cowgirl mom, a seemingly sweet daughter Virginia and her vile brother Washington. The Ghost does all he can to frighten the Americans away, but in the end it is the Duke who turns the tables by falling in love with Virginia. But first Virginia must learn a lesson or two from Sir Simon – if she is to have a Ghost of a chance…

TNT’s version has delighted audiences since 1997, from Shanghai to London and Munich to Tokyo. The combination of dynamic physical theatre, dance, comedy, masks, satire, audience participation and startling imagery grips young and old alike. The whole is complimented by Paul Flush’s musical score and a host of foot tapping songs plus a ballad or two to mix laughter with tears (or at least romance). TNT theatre and ADG Europe invite you to a magical theatrical performance in the company of yanks, ghosts, lovers, murderers, Lords, gypsies, horrible stains and the bad tempered dancing crows of Canterville.

“TNT – a theatrical firework.” – Berliner Morgenpost.

“TNT – touring theatre at its best.” – South China Morning Post.

“If young people need to be persuaded to go to the theatre this is the company to

see.” – Sudkurier, Germany.

“TNT presents true music theatre.” – Classical Music Magazine, London

Exhibition “The New Global Women” by Lawrence D’Attilio

Opening: Sun 01 Nov 2015, 5.30 pm

Exhibition: 01 – 14/11/2015

Heritage Space

Dolphin Plaza, 28 Tran Binh, My Dinh, Ha Noi

Seventy-nine visual art works of artist photographer Lawrence D’Attilio explore the tensions of young women when having to make difficult choices in life. They will be presented in the exhibition “The New Global Women”. The opening reception is at 17:30 through 20:00 and the artist will be there and a featured guest artist, American violinist Pamela Foard, will perform for you too while refreshments are served. Mrs. Foard is the wife of Mr. D’Attilio.

The exhibition consists of 32 single fine art photographs surrounding a centerpiece installation art work entitled “Challengers”. The installation art work is made up of 24 ceramic photographs of women faces and 23 transparent photographs of Ao Dai. The structure has a conical hat shape, 4.87m diameter, 3.2m tall with transparent photographs and cloth strip suspended in the structure. The installation allows people to walk into the structure up to the edges of the ceramic tiles placed on the floor.

As a mid-career artist, Lawrence has always been interested in breaking current trends in his art media. The exhibit “The New Global Women” is a typical example. The exhibit uses camera-made images re-constructed into abstract expressions as well as a cross media installation work to challenge orthodox concepts of photographic presentation. All of the art works explore the women’s tensions with their own twisting of form, color and elements of minimal narrative.

During nine years in Vietnam, Lawrence has become friends with many young educated women. They have told him about their challenges in making the life-long decisions that they are pressured to confront now. Some of the woman chose to accept the tensions in their lives, a result of their choice to pursue their lives beyond the previous traditional roles. Other women conclude that they prefer a lifestyle that is more comfortable for them and more easily accepted in their current culture.

Lawrence wanted to recognize the tensions women had while making their choices from among the greater options they have today. His idea was to create a sense of the tensions through abstraction while confronting difficult artistic choices of form.

Lawrence D’Attilio is a native of New York City and currently resides in Los Angeles and Milwaukee. He has a Fine art degree from the University of Louisville and did independent studies with Ansel Adams. He has exhibited since 1970 in Vietnam, Malaysia, Italy, and The U.S.A. He co-founded The Bathhouse Gallery of photography in 1970 and was president of The Photography Collectors investment fund. He taught photography in extensions of the University of Wisconsin, Madison and others.

Lawrence is also a successful co-plaintiff in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision involving civil liberties for people of African and Jewish heritage. Further, Lawrence had a 31 year professional music career as a bassoon player for three different major American Symphony Orchestras. He is also an aircraft pilot and was founder and president of Airdance, Inc., the management and FBO for Capital Drive Airport, (02C). Prior to that he was the founder of the Bellanca – Champion Club providing technical support for aircraft of those brands.

Airlines race to launch new routes targeting flyers in central Vietnam

Three major Vietnamese airlines are paying special attention to the south-central and central localities, with a number of new routes connecting them with those in the north already inaugurated or set for launches in October and November.

Low-cost carrier Vietjet announced on Friday it will be flying between Nha Trang, the capital city of the south-central province of Khanh Hoa, and the northern city of Hai Phong from November 19.

The Nha Trang – Hai Phong route, which lasts for about one hour and 45 minutes, is operated with a frequency of five return flights per week on every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, according to Vietjet.

Flights depart Nha Trang at 8:35 am, and from Hai Phong at 10:55 am.

Vietjet will also inaugurate the Vinh – Buon Ma Thuot service on November 20, with three return flights per week on every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Vinh is the capital city of the north-central province of Nghe An, whereas Buon Ma Thuot is its counterpart in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak.

The one hour and 25 minutes flights depart Vinh at 8:35 am, and return from Buon Ma Thuot at 10:45 am, according to Vietjet.

Vietnam urged to amend rules to facilitate foreign laborers

The current regulations on managing foreign labor in Vietnam should be changed in order to meet several reasonable demands from international employers and employees, experts said at a conference in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday.

In November 2014, the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade issued the Circular No.41, which set the requirements foreign employees have to meet to be able to move to other positions within one same business without having to apply for a work permit.

The ministry collaborated with the European Trade Policy and Investment Support Project (EU-MUTRAP) to hold the Friday event to introduce such a rule to international businesses and listen to their feedback as to any changes should be made.

The Circular No.41 was issued in a bid to improve and perfect the Vietnamese legal framework on managing foreign labor and enhance the country’s business environment, Luu Mai Lan, from the ministry’s planning department, told the conference.

The regulations also ensure the right and interest of foreign employees and their employers, Mai said.

The circular allows foreign laborers of 11 sectors in Vietnam’s WTO Commitments of the General Agreement on Trade in Services to be exempted from work permit requirements, if they move to work at other positions within their own business.

The 11 sectors include business, communication, construction, distribution, educational, environment, health, tourism, recreational, cultural and sporting, and transport services.

However, experts pointed out at the event that the Circular No.41 still has some shortcomings that need improvement to be on par with the current development of the global labor market during these times of free trade.

The circular does not cover some new investment schemes, such as the Public-Private Partnership, which are stipulated in new laws on investment that came into effect this year, according to experts.

Nguyen Viet Hung, lawyer with the Mayer Brown GSSM law firm, also suggested that foreign employees be exempted from the work permit rules if they are to move to another subsidiary under one same conglomerate.

“This is a very natural need of businesses,” the lawyer was quoted by the Vietnam News Agency as saying.

“The industry and trade ministry should consider allowing foreign laborers to move between subsidiaries of one same parent firm to better simplify the administrative procedure.”

It has been reported that the Vietnamese government is drafting a regulation that will waive work permit requirements for foreign laborers who work in Vietnam for less than 30 days.

As of the end of 2014, Vietnam had 76,309 foreign laborers, with 7.35 percent, or 5,610 people, did not have to get a work permit, according to the employment agency under the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.

More than 92.6 percent of the foreign labors were required to have a work permit but only 55,263 out of 70,699 of them, or 78.17 percent, were permitted to work in Vietnam.

The remaining 15,436 were completing procedures to get their permit, according to the agency.

Uncomspanetitive Vietnamese seafood sector to miss $8bn exspanort target

High production costs, inadequate quality and unhealthy competition are keeping the Vietnamese seafood sector far away from the export revenue target of US$8 billion, an industry association has said.

Vietnam’s seafood sector is forecast to rake in $6.6 billion from exports in 2015, far behind the $8 billion target it set in the beginning of the year, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

The estimated 2015 export turnover is also $1.2 billion lower than the 2014 figure, the VASEP said, adding catfish growers are experiencing the most hardship.

While catfish is one of the export staples of the Vietnamese seafood sector, the fish growers in the Mekong Delta are unable to find buyers, whereas catfish processors have to cut production and temporarily lay off employees.

Vietnam’s catfish export sector only earned $1.15 billion in the first nine month of this year, down 9.3 percent from a year earlier, according to the VASEP.

All of Vietnam’s traditional and major markets, including Mexico, Brazil, the EU, the U.S., and ASEAN countries, have reduced imports, exacerbating the situation, the association remarked.

With export prices constantly shrinking, some Vietnamese catfish exporters have cut prices and at the same time reduced the quality of their products in a bid to find customers.

“But such a move would only ruin the reputation of Vietnamese catfish,” Nguyen Thai Son, chairman of Thuan An Co., Ltd., commented.

“Even the catfish importers suffered losses as prices kept falling, so both importers and consumers have turned their back to Vietnamese catfish.”

Son said this is the reason why importers in Germany and Spain have stopped buying catfish from Vietnam.

There are only three Vietnamese firms allowed to ship catfish to the U.S. at a zero antidumping duty, but these exporters have also competed with each other by slashing prices constantly.

“The export price to the U.S. is now only a bit higher than $2 a kg, which in fact ‘killed’ all exporters,” Nguyen Phuoc Buu Huy, deputy general director of Cadovimex 2, a Dong Thap-based seafood firm, said.

Despite high production costs, Vietnamese catfish is being exported at low prices to the U.S. and faces high risk of an antidumping duty, so most businesses are discouraged.

Poor safety

The future is no brighter for the shrimp sector, as all of its three largest markets have cut imports, according to VASEP data.

By the end of the third quarter, Vietnam’s shrimp export revenue topped $2.13 billion, a steep 27.4 percent decline from the same period last year.

The U.S. cut 47 percent of its import of Vietnamese shrimp in the nine-month period, whereas the respective declines from Japan and the EU were 19.7 percent and 18.7 percent, according to the VASEP.

Many competitors of the Vietnamese shrimp sector, such as India, Indonesia, Ecuardo and China, have depreciated their currencies against the U.S. dollar to boost exports, according to Tran Van Linh, general director of Da Nang-based Thuan Phuoc Co.

“They have also managed to control outbreak disease for the shrimp exports, and the global shrimp supply is thus much increased, which creates chance for importers to demand price cuts,” Linh said.

In the mean time, the production costs of Vietnam’s shrimp sector are currently 20 percent higher than its competitors, so Vietnamese exporters would fail to have a competitive edge, Linh added.

Failing to meet safety and hygiene standard is also an important factor that makes Vietnam’s seafood sector fall short of its export target.

Vietnam has received 181 warnings on seafood safety from such important export markets as Japan, South Korea, the EU, the U.S., and the Eurasian Economic Union in the year to September, according to the Department of Animal Health.

The country has also had 32,000 metric tons of seafood shipment rejected for import in the last two years as they had been found to contain residues of banned antibiotics, the department said.

Con Dao Islands: a mysterious paradise

An untouched beach on Con Dao Island. Photos: Chi Nhan

Con Dao Islands, situated 97 nautical miles off Vung Tau, attract tourists with their pristine beaches and historical landmarks.

Con Dao was listed by the US-based Travel and Leisure Magazine as one of 20 most mysterious islands in the world in 2011 and recognized as Vietnam’s first sea Ramsar site last year.

The Hang Duong Cemetery houses the last remains of many local heroes who fought for the country’s independence, including Vo Thi Sau, Le Hong Phong, Nguyen An Ninh, and more than 2,000 other war martyrs.

The island is also famous for a prison used during the Vietnam War that has been preserved for posterity.

Nui Mot Pagoda is situated at a prime feng shui location, with a mountain in the back and lotus swamp and sea in the front.

Apart from historical relics, tourists can also discover the Ong Dung primitive forest some four kilometers north of the island’s main town and Dam Trau Beach 10 km further north.

Cape Shark is a good place to watch the sun rise and camp.

Bay Canh is the second largest island in the archipelago after Con Lon, and here tourists can watch sea turtles laying eggs from July to October or dive to coral reefs for VND500,000 (US$22.5).

In Con Lon, Nhat Beach some 6km from the town is almost untouched and only emerges from the sea for a few hours a day.

Love Mount, which can be seen from Nhat Beach, looks like an embracing couple.

Con Dao Market bustles from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with fresh and dried seafood and other goods.

Fresh seafood is also sold near the port at around 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. when fishermen return.

Promoting Viet Nam tourism in Belarus

Deputy Director General of VNAT Nguyen Quoc Hung speaks at the roadshow (Photo: International Cooperation Department of VNAT)

The roadshow was an opportunity to introduce Vietnamese country, people and culture to Belarusian people, enterprises and media agencies; and also for tourism enterprises of two countries to exchange information and seek cooperation possibilities.

Viet Nam highly values tourism cooperation with Belarus and Russian-speaking countries. Viet Nam which is well-known as a safe and attractive destination with the abundance of human and natural tourism resources, rich culture, friendly and hospitable people promises to bring visitors the authentic experience.

VNAT informed that Vietnamese Government has recently approved important policies to facilitate immigration procedures and improve the environment for tourism development, including unilateral visa waiver for Belarusian citizens in 5 years and for citizens of 5 Western European countries (United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain and Italy) in 1 year. Accordingly, from 1 July 2015, these nationals are not required a visa to enter Viet Nam within 15 days. With visa waiver for citizens from these 6 countries, Viet Nam has so far exempted visa for citizens from 22 countries, including 9 ASEAN countries and 7 other countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Japan and South Korea).

At the roadshow, VNAT introduced potentials and attractions of Viet Nam tourism: along with famous destinations such as Ha Noi, Ha Long Bay, Sa Pa, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Binh Thuan…, an abundance of new destinations and services attract visitors, including Son Doong Cave, beautiful scenery and local life in Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, admiring Ha Long Bay from seaplane, river tourism in Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc tropical paradise…

On this occasion, VNAT’s delegation visited TourBusiness 2015, worked with Embassy of Viet Nam in Belarus and Ministry of Sports and Tourism of Belarus.
