Monument of Vietnamese Heroic Mother seen from aerial cameras

The total investment was more than VND411 billion ($20 million).

The construction began in 2009. The monument, including the major statue and eight supportive elements, is made of granite and the image of the heroic mother is of Nguyen Thi Thu, a Vietnamese heroic mother who passed away last December.

The total volume of granite transported from Binh Dinh to Quang Nam to build the monument was 3,000 m3 of monolithic granite. It weighs 20,000 tons.

The monument has a height of 18 meters, 120m in length.

At the gate leading to the monument are eight pillars. Each pillar is 9 m high, 1.2 m in diameter, portraying Vietnamese heroic mothers.

In front of the monument is a lake. Around the monument are flower beds and a stone garden engraved with poems about heroic mothers.

Heroic mother Nguyen Thi Thu was born in 1904 in Dien Thang Trung commune, Dien Ban district, Quang Nam province. She had nine children, one son-in-law and two grandchildren who were sacrificed in two wars. Mother Thu’s daughter, Le Thi Tri, is also granted the heroic mother title because her husband and two daughters are martyred soldiers.

In the garden of Mother Thu’s home, there were five secret tunnels, where Thu and her daughter, Heroic Mother Le Thi Tri, hid many soldiers and guerrillas.

In 1994, Mother Thu was honored as the Heroic Mother of Vietnam. Her statue is on display at the Vietnam Military History Museum.
