The US suffered huge losses in this war, with nearly 60,000 soldiers killed and more than 300,000 wounded. In addition, the US Army lost 9,000 aircraft, helicopters and large numbers of other equipment.

On January 15, 1973, US President Richard Nixon announced that the US military would stop military operations against North Vietnam. Under the Paris Agreement signed on January 17, 1973, the US agreed to withdraw its troops from South Vietnam and close military bases; the two sides would exchange prisoners. In April 1975, in the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, the Vietnam Army defeated the US Army and liberated the south.
