Police in Hanoi have identified two baggage handlers who stole a smartphone from a South Korean passenger at Noi Bai Airport early this week.
Le Trong Tai, 22, and Le Van Thien, 23, gave themselves up to investigators at the Ministry of Public Security on Wednesday after they found the Samsung Galaxy Note hidden in the luggage compartment of a Vietjet plane, local media reported.
Jin Su Min, 27, on Monday reported that her phone was missing after from her suitcase after flying from Seoul.
A source from the airport said Hanoi’s aviation authorities then started to look into camera footage and checked all the handlers but they did not find the phone.
They checked the plane and found the phone the next day.
Tai and Thien, two migrant workers, said they were unloading the luggage after the flight
They found the phone and they decided to hide it first to avoid checks by security staff members.
A police officer said the case is a reminder that passengers should be more careful about their personal belongings.
The officer said people should put valuable devices in carry-on bags.
Noi Bai Airport received more than 20 baggage theft complaints this year, but its managers have not identified any culprits, except for this one case.
It’s not clear how the workers will be punished.
An executive of Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City earlier said workers caught stealing from passengers’ baggage are usually fired and won’t be able to find another job in the aviation industry. They may also face criminal charges.
