Ho Chi Minh City plans to launch a new public bus service connecting the city downtown to Tan Son Nhat International Airport to give tourists another option besides the more expensive, scam-prone taxis.
The new air-conditioned 63-seat buses will run 10.4 kilometers between Tan Son Nhat and the central bus station near Ben Thanh Market in District 1, according to a new proposal that has been sent to the transport ministry.
But the new route will not be subsidized and thus will be more expensive than other public bus routes in the city, including the one connecting the international airport and the outlying district Binh Chanh.
The current route runs 15.4 kilometers through Ben Thanh, but it has been in service for more than ten years and its old buses are not a very nice option.
The fare for the new route has not been set. Current public bus tickets in the city cost between VND5,000-10,000 (22-44 US cents).
Ho Chi Minh City last June also urged the Ministry of Planning and Investment to expand one of its metro lines in Tan Binh District to link it to Tan Son Nhat, now the country’s biggest airport.
