Exhibition Direction by Artist Nguyen Duong

The image of a little girl with red scarf covered her eyes and standing slanting in the lay-out of the painting gives us the feeling of dullness, loneliness, scare, timidity, flying into the orientation of the soul value’s existence…

Deadlock in freedom when we are on the way to find the essence of life…

Which way is suitable to us… ?

Turn left or turn right… ?

    Flee or face…?

Go straight or stay still…? Accepted?

    Mercy?

Everything can be closed or open?

Such disorientation is just like a game that the artist is searching for.

Welcome to the exhibition to see paintings by a new artist unveiled.

Concert “Ludwig van Beethoven” at Goethe Institut in December

    Thu 03 Dec 2015, 8 pm

    Goethe-Institut Hanoi

56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi

This year, on the 245th birthday of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, the Goethe-Institut presents a four-part concert series at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi. The ten sonatas for violin and piano will be performed by the renowned musicians Nguyen My Huong and Dao Trong Tuyen.

For the last concert of the Beethoven cycle, which the Goethe-Institut presented in honour of the great composer this autumn, musicians Nguyen My Huong and Dao Trung Tuyen will finish the cycle with sonatas No. 6 and 9. The latter also carries the name “Kreutzer Sonata”, after the French virtuoso violinist Rudolphe Kreutzer. Originally however, the sonata was dedicated to violinist George Bridgetower, with whom Beethoven played the debut performance in 1803. Legend has it that the two men quarreled over a woman, whereupon Beethoven subsequently changed the dedication to Kreutzer. Who knows whether it was the music or rather the dramatic story that inspired Leo Tolstoi to his novella “The Kreutzer Sonata” in 1887…

Beethoven has brought the Classical form to its highest expressive level and he is considered as a pioneer of Romanticism. With his sonatas for violin, composed between 1797 and 1812, he created an extraordinary musical cycle, which can, for the first time, be experienced in Hanoi in full length. Even more strongly than before, the violin appears as an equal instrument next to the piano in the “Kreutzer Sonata”. His contemporaries were surprised at the novel kind of composition, which they perceived as anarchic and wild. Experiencing these creations live is a very special opportunity for all music lovers.

    PROGRAM

    – Sonata No. 6 in A major, Opus 30

    – Sonata No. 9 in A major, Opus 47

Nguyen My Huong studied at Hanoi Art School, Vietnam National Academy of Music with Professor Ngo Van Thanh as well as at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz with Professor Thomas Zehetmair. Among other prices she has been awarded with the “Youth Talent Award”. As a member of the Asian Youth Orchestra and the

PMF Orchestra she played many concerts abroad and also took part in training courses in Japan, China, Germany, Austria and the USA. Currently, Nguyen My Huong works as a soloist in chamber music concerts with Vietnamese and foreign counterparts. She is second violin principal in the National Symphony Orchestra and teaches at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Moreover, she has received an offer to be concertmaster in Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dao Trong Tuyen studied with several prestigious piano teachers such as Hoang Vinh Huong, Hoang Hoa, Joel Pasquier, Professor Tran Thu Ha and Professor Đặng Thái Sơn. In 2007, he completed his Doctorate of Music in Piano Performance at the University of Montreal in Canada. Dao Trong Tuyen won the first prize in the National piano competition in 1990 and he has played concerts in Canada, France and Japan. He has recorded a large number of works for Vietnam National Television and Vietnam National Radio. He has also performed as a soloist with major orchestras in Vietnam such as Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra and Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Orchestra.

At present, Dao Trong Tuyen is a piano teacher at the Vietnam National Academy of Music.

Due to the limited number of seats we kindly ask only visitors from the age of 12 and up to come.

Tickets for 03.12.2015 are available starting Thursday, 26 November, 9 am at Goethe-Institut Hanoi.

Solo Exhibition “White, Black & Gold” by Le Hoang Bich Phuong

    Opening: Fri 04 Dec 2015, 10 am

    Exhibition: 04 – 25 Dec 2015, 9 am – 6 pm

Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam

    27 Quang Trung

    Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội

The Japan Foundation Center for cultural exchange in Vietnam, proudly hosts an art exhibition by Le Hoang Bich Phuong “White, Black & Gold” in Hanoi from 4 December to 25 December 2015.

Le Hoang Bich Phuong is a Ho Chi Minh City based young artist who was awarded an artist-in-residence at S-AIR in Sapporo City, Japan, through the “JENESYS Invitation Program for Creators” operated by the Japan Foundation. She had her first silk painting solo exhibition titled “A transformative disguise” in 2012 in Hanoi and HCMC supported by the Japan Foundation and San Art. In 2015, she comes up with “White, Black & Gold” with a new material, ceramic.

Since graduation, Phuong has always been attracted to traditional techniques. This project is a new experiment – a combination of her ideas and an innovative Vietnamese craft technique, a departure from silk painting. All artworks will be made of glass and ceramic, and are hand-made. This is done entirely with the support from the talented artisans of Bat Trang ceramic village. Through this project, it is her goal that these pieces will recall Vietnamese traditional art crafts that are now faded by modernizing trends in Vietnam.

In this exhibition a series of installations in ceramic will be divided into three spaces with three art works, representing her dreams or ours. People are constantly compelled by an unidentified urge to fulfill their dreams, and likewise gain greater access to life’s blessings. They struggle and evolve in an effort to reach these dreams, to reach this end. To Phuong, all of us are as random as the creation of planets. Born, then strung together in a cluster like a galaxy, an asymmetrical chain.

Following our creation, we are impacted and influenced by each other. Like asteroids, actions create sequences we can at times anticipate. Other impacts set in motion unintended consequences. We seek and chase the broader spaces. We pay no mind to the effects they may cause surrounding planets. Somehow, we deviate from the universal system of order. Our path breeds jealousy, as we seek greener pastures just over the horizon. It is her belief that peaceful consciousness instills order. It is in fact our forgotten promised land – abandoned in pursuit of meandering dreams.

    ARTIST’S PROFILE

Le Hoang Bich Phuong (b. 1984, Ho Chi Minh City) is one of Vietnam’s most promising young artists whose study of Vietnamese and Japanese silk painting traditions has greatly influenced her own unique style and technique. Influenced by the ukiyo-e tradition, while also drawn to the popular world of the comic, Bich Phuong’s strong command of line and color creates an ethereal, near surreal presence. A graduate of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts University, she was awarded an artist-in-residence in Sapporo, Japan, as part of the “JENESYS Program: Invitation Program for Creators” of the Japan Foundation in 2011 and that same year was also one of the finalists for the DOGMA Art Prize in self-portraiture. In 2010 she was finalist in the “Talent Prize” of the Cultural Development and Exchange Fund.

    Recent exhibitions include:

    – Sapporo Biennale 2011, Sapporo, Japan, 2011

    – “Shaping a line”, San Art, HCMC, Vietnam, 2011

    L’Espace

    24 Tràng Tiền, Hà Nội

You are invited to painting exhibition “Far in the North” and the selection of Ha Manh Thang during the period of 2012-2015.

In a remote part of his subconscious, there is a place which Ha Manh Thang called “North”, a place where a blue-gray tint still remains, blending into twilight, which he believes is the far north…

“Far in the North” is one part of the series “Vietnam’s landscape” that Ha Manh Thang has been working on for the last 3 years. The series is mainly centered on the temples and pagodas of North Vietnam. However, the background of reality in this new series has totally disappeared and he only painted the temples and pagodas in the Northern countryside areas of Vietnam based on their architectural drawings and a bit of real context that has been left on them.

Previous exhibitions by Ha Manh Thang:

    – Exhibition “Winter Hues” in Hanoi (2015)

    – Exhibition “Khói sóng” tại TP. HCM (2015)

    – Exhibition ““Fading Dreams – Disintegrating Realities”” tại Thái Lan (2014)

Cultural centre opens at Hue royal office site

VietNamNet Bridge – The Hue Monuments Conservation Centre has opened a new culture centre for tourists at a historic site that had been an office during the Hue royal dynasty.

The site is located at 79 Nguyen Chi Dieu Street, Hue City.

The complex had once housed offices of six governing agencies of the Nguyen dynasty, similar to the present ministries of home affairs, education, culture, defence, transportation and law.

Also at the location, a school was built in 1879 by King Tu Duc (1829-83), and was called Chanh Mong Duong, for his adopted son Dong Khanh’s (1864-89).

In 1881, King Tu Duc built another school building in the complex called Duc Duc Duong for another adopted son, Duc Duc (1853-83).

King Thanh Thai (1879-1954) later changed the name of the complex to Ton Hoc. At that time the area was used as an office for mandarins in charge of education and training.

In 1968, the complex was used as the office for the local department of War Invalids and Social Affaires. Over the years, many structures within the complex had fallen into disrepair and were repeatedly renovated. In 2005, the complex was handed over to the Hue Monuments Conservations Centre.

Earlier this year, the complex was again renovated and is now a cultural centre for local residents and tourists.

Among the new activities to take place at the complex, the centre will host tea processing ceremonies using traditional ingredients, as prescribed by the Nguyen dynasty’s doctors, as well as offer delicacies from the dynasty, such as royal wine and royal medicines.

Handicraft demonstrations will also be held to display bamboo conical hats, Hue rice cakes, bamboo wares, paper flowers, lotus-scented tea, and pet birds.

The week is part of a series of activities to celebrate the 250th birth anniversary of the great poet (1765 – 1820).

Being the pioneer in the dissemination and introduction of Resolution, Ha Noi Tourism Association timely deployed activities in the Resolution and required local tourism businesses to focus on enhancing service quality, applying flexible solutions to ensure sustainability and long-term growth.

To effectively implement the Resolution, there should be close coordination between all levels and sectors, especially local governments and media press.

If the Resolution is well carried out, the competitiveness capacity of the “smokeless industry sector” will be enhanced significantly.

Vietnamese visitors to Jaspanan growing steadily

The number of Vietnamese tourists visiting Japan has constantly increased, while on the other side Vietnam has failed to pull Japanese holidaymakers.

Ito Kazuhiro, director of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) in Bangkok, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan has risen by more than 53 percent compared to the same period last year.

Vietnam is currently among Japan’s top 10 foreign tourist markets and enjoys the third-fastest growth rate, after only mainland China and Hong Kong, in the East Asian country’s tourism sector, Kazuhiro noted.

“Despite the absence of official statistics, our estimates have indicated that approximately 10 percent of Vietnamese tour buyers return to our country for the second time,” he added.

The JNTO branch director stressed that Japanese travel firms have made a point of promoting their country’s appeal to their Vietnamese counterparts.

All the prefectures home to gorgeous places of interest are keen to welcome vacationers from the Southeast Asian country.

JNTO once sent up to 41 representatives of Japanese prefectures on one single trip to Vietnam for the activity, according to Kazuhiro.

However, he admitted that among five million Vietnamese arrivals abroad each year, only 200,000 are recorded in Japan.

He attributed it partly to visa requirements.

“Though Japan has eased visa requirements for Vietnamese travelers on organized tours, not all applications for Japanese visas are accepted, which lies beyond our power,” he explained.

Kazuhiro pointed to the current lack of direct flights from major Vietnamese airports to Japan as another important reason.

Vietnam is now connected to only four destinations in Japan with a low daily flight frequency.

Vietnamese vacationers mostly tour around Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Nagoya, while there are many other stunning sights to explore elsewhere in Japan.

By contrast, some other Southeast Asian countries like Thailand boast multiple flights per day from their airports to at least six or seven destinations in Japan.

JNTO is slated to organize a clutch of tourism events to better introduce the country’s charm to potential Vietnamese visitors in early 2016.

The organization also plans to hold regular meetings between Japanese representatives and Vietnamese travel firms for this exact purpose.

Speaking about the Vietnamese tourism sector’s failure to attract one million Japanese arrivals in 2015 as planned, Kazuhiro asserted to Tuoi Tre that the Japanese do find Vietnamese sights, cuisine and souvenirs alluring.

However, he blamed the poor foreign arrivals on the Japanese economic malaise, which has caused Japanese people to refrain from holidays abroad over the past two years.

“A recently launched direct flight from [the central city of] Da Nang to Tokyo will hopefully boost arrivals among Japanese tourists fond of Hoi An [a UNESCO-recognized ancient town located in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Nam] in the coming months,” Kazuhiro added.

He also urged that Japanese holidaymakers be better informed of Vietnam’s new destinations and services as well as its tempting cuisine.

Representatives of the Japan National Tourism Organization in Vietnam said at least three or four delegations from Japanese travel companies arrive in Vietnam each month to promote the East Asian country’s allure.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese tourism sector had welcomed 551,992 Japanese arrivals as of the end of October 2015, or a mere 3-percent rise over the same period last year, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

A visit to the Oceanographic Museum of Vietnam

The museum is located at 1 Cau Da St., about 5km from Nha Trang City Center. It is an interesting aquarium with images of Nha Trang’s marine environment. Opened to the public on September 14th, 1922, today it is still a popular destination for both domestic and foreign tourists.

The collection of this museum spreads out over two floors. The ground floor is home to fish tanks of varying sizes that house all manner of marine life.

All kinds of fish you would find in the sea area of Khanh Hoa Province are presented there: reef sharks, turtles, living coral, anemones, puffers, lionfish, clownfish, seahorses, and a whole array of colorful reef species, some of which can be found in no other place in the world.

Each of them has a label indicating their name, origin and characteristics in Vietnamese and in English.

The upstairs floor is for exhibiting specimens, local boats and fishing artifacts, plus an 18 meter long whale skeleton.

Over its long history, this museum has been holding more than 20,000 specimens of tropical marine creatures. Apart from the real fish, there are also rare species’ skeletons or bodies preserved in formaldehyde solution.

Apart from the museum aquariums, there are also many theme rooms which focus on marine science featuring the history of its research equipment and technology such as: “From Light to Life” (features algae and phytoplankton), “Life in a Drop of Water” (microscopic aquatic organisms), or rooms illustrating coastal natural disasters, sacred legends, traditions and culture of Vietnam fishing.

Far-flung destinations, backpacking trips, discover new places, Vietnam economy, Vietnamnet bridge, English news about Vietnam, Vietnam news, news about Vietnam, English news, Vietnamnet news, latest news on Vietnam, Vietnam

Do you remember your first backpacking trips? Was it your intention or just by accident to travel by backpack?

The first trip was made after I failed my college examination. I felt pressure from my family and I escaped to my uncle’s house in Nha Trang City in the central province of Khanh Hoa.

I stayed there two months and tramped across every corner there. I began to develop feelings of being a backpacker.

In 2001, I joined a group of new friends and we started a journey from the ancient town of Hoi An in the central province of Quang Nam. We hitchhiked, travelling to Sa Pa in the northern province of Lao Cai.

I was very impressed by this trip because of the unexpected situations. When we hitchhiked across Hai Van Pass we did not know that the taxi driver and his assistant were drug addicts. At midnight, they mainlined drugs and we were so scared. We dared not sleep. Thank God nothing happened to us.

Anyway, the trip inspired me with its imposing landscapes at the northwest of the country. I wanted to discover this area by backpacking. But I thought I lacked knowledge about the northwestern area, and about backpacking, as well.

To prepare for trips to the northwest area I spent seven years backpacking, to discover different places in the Central Highlands, as well as the central and southern provinces, which were much closer than the northwest.

You spent about 14 years going to destinations that are remote and the highest in Viet Nam, what experience could you offer new backpackers?

The biggest thing is to ensure your safety. I see many young backpackers who are not well prepared. It is necessary to study about destinations through the Internet and meet people who have gone there and seek information.

Also, it is not a waste of money to buy special-in-use clothing, because it is very dangerous to be without warm clothes in winter.

The most important is what to know by yourself. Normally, when going to new destinations that are very unique, backpackers should have GPS, be followed by local people and keep in touch with family.

I know many backpackers who became lost in forests or in mountains, and they were rescued by local residents.

What do you get from the trips?

At the beginning, I wanted to view beautiful landscapes throughout the whole country. But now, I think these trips make me more mature and more confident. Going to the northwest, I meet people who are strange, but very kind, offering me free accommodation. They offer me a lesson about life. It is really meaningful for my personal growth.

Not only myself, but almost all backpackers turn into different people who are more open and selfless. We are ready to help others and are interested in charity work.

Now, I’m firm and steady when overcoming hazardous circumstances.

What has backpacking meant to you?

Frankly, I know the word “backpacking” thanks to my joining tourism forums on the Internet. For many people, backpacking means adventures with danger to unique destinations. But for me, backpacking is setting up a trip to discover new places in my own way. Backpacking trips help me have more experiences, get to know the world and to learn how to listen and share.

Why did you want to conquer the four poles and one peak in Viet Nam?

It is interesting to know that almost all backpackers dream to conquer these places. I was not the exception. I created a plan to turn the dream into something real. I reached Mount Fansipan – the peak of three countries in former Indochina, comprising Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia, in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range.

Step by step I went to the four poles of Viet Nam.

The west pole in A Pa Chai, Dien Bien Province is a unique location. It is located right at the border T-junction of three countries: Viet Nam – Laos – China. So if you stand there and scream, three countries can hear you.

Have you ever had to be rescued because you were in danger?

Last Lunar New Year, I went to the real north pole of Viet Nam. Everybody says Lung Cu in Ha Giang Province is the north pole, but it is not. From Lung Cu and going straight to the north about 1,7km, the north pole is in the middle of the Nho Que River.

I asked permission from the border guards while I was going there. But we were lost. We had to slide on the grass because there was no other way. Then we lost each other. Luckily, one of us had a GPS handphone and he called the border guards.

The trip to Border Marker 42 in Pa Ve Su Commune, Lai Chau Province’s Muong Te District – the second highest point in the country — is also the most remarkable. To get there it took four days. I and the border guards had to cross ice-cold streams, trek in freezing temperatures and brave steep slopes.

There was no marked trail or path, but that didn’t stop us from walking through the forest.

Our steps seemed to get slower and slower as we crawled up the seemingly endless slope. After four days and three nights, we reached the border marker, a sacred place where soldiers keep watch over the nation’s sovereignty.

What valuable lessons have you learned from these trips?

I remember mostly the trip to Muong Te in the northern province of Lai Chau. While we were driving up the mountain the car ran out of petrol. We met an ethnic person who was driving. He gestured to us, but we did not understand. We were afraid that he wanted to refill our car and ask us for a lot of money.

After communicating with gestures for a while, he refilled our car and we could go. We offered him money, but he wouldn’t take it.

In that case, we behaved as city people and thought that everything should be paid with money. We learned a life lesson from that man.

Did you find your love and your work as a photographer thanks to your backpacking hobby?

I met my love by chance in 2008. She was fragile before she met and loved me. But she became my good fellow-traveller. As a teacher, she is transmitting not only knowledge, but also practical experiences that she receives from backpacking trips to her students.
