Conductor Philippe Lesburguères

As a Contemporary Music enthusiast, he made decisive encounters with the composers Gyorgy Ligeti in 1989 and Astor Piazzolla in 1983 to whom he was transmitted Piazzolla’s passion for “nueva tango” and to whom he created musical works for chamber orchestra.

He also directed plenty of orchestras and musical ensembles with very diverse styles from early music with instruments of that period to contemporary music.

He is now the Director of the Art’s Plazza Academy in Casablanca, Morocco. He has been a permanent professor since 2006 for the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guanghzou, China and the University of Shanghai, China.

Photo Installation “8m²” by Nguyen The Son

Opening: Thu 13 Aug 2015, 6 pm

Exhibition: 14 – 30 Aug 2015, 9 am – 7 pm

Goethe Institut

56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi

“I remember 8m² was a standard, a minimum requirement of living space for one person during the subsidized economy. Nowadays, after half a century struggling, many people still have to toss and turn in that 8m² space, but it is not 8m² for just one person, at times it is 8m² for 8 people…”

In his photo installation “8m²”, artist Nguyen The Son addresses the individual consequences of the progressing industrialization in Vietnam. People who move to the city in quest of work and often live there in the smallest spaces under severe conditions for years. The project documents the small corners of these living environments and gives the workers a voice by incorporating their personal belongings into the artwork.

The installation was shown for the first time within the exhibition Green Journey for Vietnam at the University of Fine Arts in Vietnam. The Goethe-Institut is pleased to present the project now as solo exhibition and in an extended version.

After completing his studies in Chinese language and fine arts, Nguyen The Son worked at the University of Fine Arts before he graduated in Photography at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Since 2012, the artist has been working as a lecturer at the University of Fine Arts Vietnam and has been represented in many group and solo exhibitions. His latest project “Hanoi – a living museum” combines past memories of the city with the changing rhythm of the present. Take a virtual tour around the exhibition here.

Free admission.

Exhibition “Heterotopias as Other” by artist Lien Truong

Opening: Wed 05 Aug 2015, 6 pm

Artist talk: Wed 05 Aug 2015, 4 pm

Exhibition: 05 – 16 Aug 2015

Nha San Collective

2nd floor, 24 Ly Quoc Su, Hanoi

From Nha San Collective:

Nha San Collective is pleased to present exhibition “Heterotopias as Other” by artist Lien Truong.

Embracing Michel Foucault’s concept of Heterotopias as sites that mirror, distort and invert other spaces, Lien Truong’s work implicates the labyrinth of our collective history. Through the lens of abstraction, painted gestures adorned with textile designs suggest national identities. The nonverbal aesthetics of textiles transcends language barriers, and potential of cloths’ capacity to be culturally absorbed. This trade once cultivated Western supremacy, assigning the East with exotic mystery, and supplanting it significantly as “the Other”. In Truong’s paintings’, mimetic movements become phantoms to the chords of colonialism. Gestures envelop, penetrate, and permeate among echoes of water and fluids. The painted forms coalesce into convoluted space, ultimately creating heterotopias bound by visual lyricism.

Lien Truong had had an exhibition titled “The Orient, The Occident” in HCMC in April 2014.
