Vietnamese children"s book wins top award 370w

A Vietnamese children’s book, entitled Cuoc Hanh Trinh Dau Tien(The First Journey), by Phung Nguyen Quang and Huynh Kim Lien has won Scholastic Picture Book Award’s Grand Prize 2015.

The award, launched by the National Book Development Council of Singapore and Scholastic Asia, aims to foster the creation of picture books with Asian content by Asian writers and illustrators.

The First Journey was written by Quang and illustrated by Lien in two weeks. The story, about the first trip of a boy in the Mekong Delta, beat 135 other books by amateur and established authors.

Going to school on the first day during the Mekong Delta flood season, The First Journey’s protagonist faces rain and flood. He has to cross a swamp what is full of crocodiles and snakes. But he is not scared because he knows that wonderful places are waiting for him at the end of the road.

Quang, 26, is a professional author and illustrator of children’s books. Lien, 23, is a writer and illustrator of children’s books. Both live and work in HCM City. They have co-operated with the global non-profit organisation Room to Read in Viet Nam.

They came to know about the award on Facebook and had only two weeks to submit a manuscript.

“We spent two days coming up with the idea, two days to write the story and nine days of intense work,” Quang said on media.com

“We really admire writer Son Nam and his books make us love the Mekong Delta. Actually, we’ve never been there before, but the landscapes felt very familiar.”

Winning the first prize was beyond their dreams because the four other shortlisted rivals are talented people.

“The judges said we won because our story was not only friendly towards children, but offered them a new world to discover,” they said in an interview with media.com.

Quang and Lien were awarded S$10,000 (US$7,000) and a plaque. The first runners-up were Indonesia’s Ary Nilandari and Dewi Tri K, while the second runners-up were Mongolia’s Ganbaatar Ichinnorov and Bolormaa Baasansuren.

100 + year-old wooden houses in Hoi Ky Village

VietNamNet Bridge – Hoi Ky ancient village in Hai Chanh commune, Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province is located by the O Lau river. The village is more than 500 years old.

Visitors to the village are amazed at the numerous ancient wooden houses known as Nha Ruong, religious establishments, and the peaceful lives of the local people.

Along the road to Hoi Ky village are temples, pagodas and clan worship houses which boast unique architectural styles. But visitors are most amazed at the centuries-old wooden houses nestled in large gardens along O Lau River.

These houses, which belong to the Duong family clan, have 5 or 7 rooms and wing rooms and are made of thick solid wood. Their columns and doors are engraved with dragons, unicorns, phoenixes and other delicate patterns.

In each house, there are lacquered boards with parallel sentences teaching children to do good. Doors between rooms are beautifully decorated. The room in the middle is used to worship ancestors while its two neighboring rooms serve living and bed rooms.

Of the other two wing rooms, the one on the west is for boys and the one on the east is for girls. There’s also an entresol in the house that contains rice and other home objects.

Among the 20 ancient houses in the village, 6 have 3 main rooms and 2 wing rooms. They are about 100 years old. Local people have restored their houses and all want to maintain their identity.

Depending on the size of the house, each roof has between 10,000 and 20,000 brick tiles made of clay. The tiles are rectangular, thin, flat and can produce a bell sound when they are knocked. This way of tiling makes the house cool in summer and warm in winter.

Walls of the house are made of lime and wood hammered bricks. Every house is surrounded by trimmed green tree fences.

Hoi Ky ancient village still retains its values. The village was founded in the 15th century but its houses are between 100 and 150 years old. The landscape in the village is beautiful with a river zigzagging around the village, small lanes, wharves, and a communal yard. These are typical characteristics of rural Vietnam.”

Mr. Duong Van Manh’s house, which has 3 main rooms and 2 wing rooms and a roof with 10,000 tiles, is the most typical. Named “Happiness convergence”, the house is situated in the middle of a large garden.

Built in 1889, the house is sustained with 48 jackfruit wooden columns. Built in 1931, Ms Duong Thi Huong’s house has one main room and 2 wing rooms and covers about 60 square meters. Inside the house, there’s a lacquered board saying “4 generations living in the same house”.

According to traditional beliefs, a house with 4 generations living together is a happy house. Most of the houses in Hoi Ky hang a lacquered board with the word “Peace” on it.

The locals in Hoi Ky are proud of their houses which stand firm and retain their traditional values despite war and climate devastation. These houses have great historical, cultural and architectural values, according to Kitani Kenta, an expert from the UNESCO World Heritage Institute at Japan’s Waseda University.

Kitani Kenta says the ancient wooden houses of Hoi Ky are wonderful, sophisticated and skillfully built. These outstanding features need to be promoted.

The latest photos of the ancient village:

The oldest house in the village is over 200 years old, owned by Ms. Duong Bich Ngoc.

The house of Mrs. Duong Thi Quang Huong, 95. It is also over 100 years old.

The village also has many old family temples

The chief village, Mr. Duong Van Cho, said that of the 20 ancient houses in the village, six are fully made by wood.

Untold stories about Vietnam’s most expensive paintings

VietNamNet Bridge – After years participating in auctions held by major auction houses in the world, collector Nguyen Minh has brought home nearly 30 paintings by well-known artists of Vietnam such as Vu Cao Dam, Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu, and Le Thi Luu.

An exhibition titled “Art of Vietnam – Another Look,” which showcased more than 50 art works by well-known Vietnamese modern artists since the period of École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine (Indochina Fine Arts College) and beyond from October 19-23, has just closed.

Raising the value of Vietnamese paintings

Untold stories about Vietnam’s most expensive paintings, Vu Cao Dam, Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu, Le Thi Luu

Collector Nguyen Minh

Some may wonder if Nguyen Minh’s effort to bring back Vietnamese artworks home was for “business” or “art”. The answer is both.

Minh said the first motive for “repatriation” of paintings must be love because if only profit was considered, he could not take a “risk” in auctions.

Minh has a great passion for paintings by the artists of the “golden generation” of the Indochina College of Fine Arts (L’ecole des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine), especially Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu, and Vu Cao Dam. So, when participating in the auction of paintings by these artists, he was often more “aggressive” than usual.

“Obviously, I’m a painting collector so I also have to take into account the elements relating to trade in order to balance revenues and expenditures,” he said.

The fruits of his passion are 12 paintings by Le Pho, nine paintings by Vu Cao Dam, six paintings of by Mai Trung Thu and one painting by Le Thi Luu.

In addition to “repatriating” Vietnamese paintings, collector Nguyen Minh has also contributed to Vietnamese art in another perspective: Raising the price of Vietnamese paintings on international auction floors. “The time when I silently bought Vietnamese paintings, the prices for Vietnamese paintings was not high.

“Commercially, it was an advantage for me, but for the country’s art, it was a disadvantage. Since my successful auction of four paintings by Vu Cao Dam and then a series of paintings by Le Pho was reported by the local newspapers, Vietnamese painting lovers have found a new ‘channel’ to take Vietnamese paintings home,” said Minh.

According to collector Nguyen Minh, during the online auctions of Vietnamese paintings recently held by world-renowned auction houses as Sotheby’s (Hong Kong) and Christie’s (Hong Kong), more accounts “from Vietnam” participated.

“Hence, the price of Vietnamese paintings is increasing and Vietnamese paintings have attracted more attention from world collectors. For example, on November 22, 2014, the painting ‘View from atop of the hill’ by artist Le Pho reached the record price of $840,000. The painting sold by Christie’s far exceeded the 2013 record for the painting ‘The rice seller’ by Nguyen Phan Chanh ($340,000). The price of million USD for Vietnamese paintings is no longer a dream,” Minh said.

Contribution of overseas artists

Untold stories about Vietnam’s most expensive paintings, Vu Cao Dam, Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu, Le Thi Luu

“Mother and baby” by Le Pho

“The artists like Le Pho, Le Thi Luu, Mai Trung Thu, and Vu Cao Dam lived abroad but their paintings are all about Vietnam, showing the Vietnamese soul. And, their contributions to promote Vietnamese art to the world have been huge,” said painter Luong Xuan Doan, Vice Chair of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association.

“However, these artists have not been rewarded with the nation’s top prizes as the State Award and the Ho Chi Minh Award,” Doan said.

“Previously we lacked the resources to assess the paintings of these artists but the exhibition ‘Art of Vietnam – Another Look’, has provided professionals the original paintings as the basis for assessment and recognition of the contribution of expatriate artists,” Doan said.

Collector Nguyen Minh said the names of Vu Cao Dam, Mai Trung Thu, Le Thi Luu, and Le Pho have been recognized worldwide. These artists and their artworks have long been considered a vital part of the face of Vietnam arts so the recognition of the contribution of these artists at this time came late. But better late than never.

UK Film Week 2015: “Music is Great Britain”

From The Beatles to Queen, from The Rolling Stones to One Direction, from Elton John to Amy Winehouse, Adele to Ed Sheeran, musical talents from the British Isles have been ruling the world. But there is much more to tell behind all the glory and fame, this year’s UK Film Week in Vietnam pays tribute to all the unsung heroes in making music as an integral part of Great Britain.

UK Film Week 2015

Organised by British Council Vietnam to showcase the best of UK cinema, the 2015 UK Film Week will take place from 4 to 12 November at CGV Cinemas in Hanoi, Danang and Ho Chi Minh City.

Award-winning films to be screened during the week include God Help the Girl (2014), Nowhere Boy (2009), Pulp (2014), Northern Soul (2014), Good Vibrations (2013), Control (2007) and Bugsy Malone (1976).

At this year’s UK film week, audiences will be lost in a world where music becomes helps to heal a girl who suffers from anorexia (God Help the Girl) or where the citizens of a small town are revitalised and united through Pulp’s songs for “Common People” (Pulp: a Film about Life, Death and Supermarkets). Thrills are guaranteed for the loyal fans of The Beatles in Vietnam in Nowhere Boy as they can see John Lennon’s early life as he started his banjo lessons, bought his first guitar, formed the Quarrymen, gave himself an Elvis hairdo, switched to Buddy Holly-style horn-rims, met with Paul McCartney and was refused entry to the Cavern.

The tragic life and death of many talented musicians can be shared through Control, an epic film about Ian Curtis, the frontman of Joy Division, an English rock band from Manchester. A dramatic portrayal of Curtis, Control takes audiences through Curtis’ failing marriage and epilepsy, which worsened his mood swings and made performing live incredibly difficult for him. The story that led to his suicide at the age of 23 is told brilliantly, making Control a “must see” film.

For those who want some humour, Bugsy Malone is an excellent choice. It is a gangster movie a cast entirely of children. The BAFTA-winning musical was directed by Sir Alan Parker whose films (including Evita) won 19 BAFTAs and 10 Oscars. Bugsy Malone works as a “real” gangster movie but with a sense of childlike innocence too.

SCREENING SCHEDULE

UK Film Week 2015

GOD HELP THE GIRL (2014)

“God help the girl” was directed by Stuart Murdoch who is the mainstay of the Scottish indie band Belle and Sebastian himself. It tells the story of Eve, a young woman with anorexia who escapes from hospital for a summer adventure with her friends. Together they write songs as part of the healing process.

NOWHERE BOY (2009)

“Nowhere boy” was a superbly acted film that depicts John Lennon in his late teens. The story of John Lennon’s childhood and teenage years from 1944 to 1960, his relationship with his aunt Mimi and his mother Julia – the two dominant women in the first part of his life, his first meeting with Paul McCartney and George Harrison, their friendship, their love for music and the birth of The Beatles.

PULP: A FILM ABOUT LIFE, DEATH & SUPERMARKETS (2014)

“Pulp: a film about Life, Death & Supermarkets” is a documentary telling stories about Pulp, the world-famous band from the streets of Sheffield with the help of friends, family and fans, who all have their own stories to tell. Northern Soul is about a youth culture in the 1970s which changed a generation. It tells the tale of a nightclub based movement which developed in Northern England. The film is an uplifting account of two young boys whose horizons are opened up by the discovery of black American soul music.

GOOD VIBRATIONS (2013)

In the 1970s, in Belfast, Terri Hooley is an idealistic rocker who finds himself caught in the middle of Northern Ireland’s bitter Troubles. Seeing a parallel in the chaos with Jamaica, Hooley opens a record shop, Good Vibrations, to help bring reggae music to his city to help encourage some harmony. However, Hooley soon discovers a new music genre, punk rock, and is inspired by its youthful vitality to become an important record producer and promoter of the local scene. In doing so, Hooley would struggle both with the industry’s realities and his chaotic personal life that threaten to consume him. However, he would also be instrumental in creating an alternative Irish community that would bridge his land’s religious and social rivalries with an art no one expected.

CONTROL (2007)

Ian Curtis is a quiet and rather sad lad who works for an employment agency and sings in a band called Warsaw. He meets a girl named Debbie whom he promptly marries and his band, of which the name in the meantime has been changed to Joy Division, gets more and more successful. Even though Debbie and he became parents, their relationship is going downhill rapidly and Ian starts an affair with Belgium Annik whom he met after one of the gigs and he’s almost never at home. Ian also suffers from epilepsy and has no-good medication for it. He doesn’t know how to handle the feelings he has for Debbie and Annik and the pressure the popularity of Joy Division and the energy performing costs him.

BUGSY MALONE (1976)

New York, 1929, a war rages between two rival gangsters: Fat Sam and Dandy Dan. Dan is in possession of a new and deadly weapon, the dreaded “splurge gun”. As the custard pies fly, Bugsy Malone, an all-round nice guy, falls for Blousey Brown, a singer at Fat Sam’s speakeasy. His designs on her are disrupted by the seductive songstress Tallulah who wants Bugsy for herself. How is Bugsy to get the girl and help Fat Sam defend his business against the deadly Dan and his dastardly tricks? With an all-child cast placed in a mobster era, armed with custard instead of bullets and belting out some superb songs, this is simply entertainment at its best.

The unique art form of water puppetry

Bui Thuong village in Le Loi commune, Gia Loc district, the northern province of Hai Duong is famous for water puppetry, a unique cultural characteristic of the Red River Delta region.

Initiated in the era of the Ly Dynasty (the 11th-12th centuries), water puppetry has been associated with the life and various festivals of Bui Thuong village. Despite the changing context throughout history, Bui Thuong water puppetry has been preserved and developed due to the enthusiasm and passion of local artisans.

On the occasion of the traditional rural market being exhibited at the Vietnamese Ethnic Groups Culture-Tourism Village in Son Tay district, Hanoi from October 16-18, the water puppetry troupe from Bui Thuong village held unique performances, attracting a large number of visitors.
