Ghosts and ghouls set to storm Saigon for Halloween

Double double toil and trouble … If you are looking for spooky times for Halloween, there are worse places to be than HCMC.

While it’s not necessarily the most popular of occasions for local Vietnamese, the city has really started to come around. Locals and expats alike are becoming ever more creative with costumes and events, and this year should be a good one.

Here are some options for you to have a spooky Oct. 31:

Rocking out at Cargo Bar is never a bad thing. The District 4 venue has become the go-to spot for international acts in the city, but also puts on some pretty fun parties. Jameson Irish Whiskey and Cargo Event Space have announced the 3rd annual Saigon Halloween Cover Show and second Run for Cover Event.

Featuring musicians from your favorite local bands including James and the Van Der Beeks, Mekong Delta Force, Space//Panther, Dat Phonk, Red Amity, The Lost Art, The Secret Asians, Tastes Like Chicken, and Growsound, among others. These players will be bringing you 10 amazing performances covering some of their favorite artists.

Cover performances will include: Bjork; Kool and the Gang; En Vogue; Foo Fighters; Queens of the Stone Age; Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three; Nirvana; Green Day; Steel Pulse; Nine Inch Nails and more.

Tickets are VND100,000 entrance with a costume and VND150,000 without one. Cargo Event Space is at 7 Nguyen Tat Thanh Street in HCMC’s District 4.

Zombies: Wake Up Saigon are staging their 4th Zombie Walk! Years past have seen the denizens of District 1 terrified by hundreds of wandering, often inebriated zombie people. At the time of this writing, details are cryptic so visit the group’s Facebook page. The event often culminates with a big scary photo somewhere near the Opera House and barhopping afterward.

Pro basketball: Not sure how much we’ll see in the way of costumes, but the Saigon Heat kick off their fourth season in the ASEAN Basketball League when they take on the Singapore Slingers at the Canadian International School (CIS) in District 7.

Coach Anthony Garbelotto, sharpshooter David Arnold and of course the Saigon HotGirls are all back and looking to build off last season’s first-ever playoff appearance. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.

Yoga: Fancy some yoga? The Happy Halloween Glow Yoga Charity Event which take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 31 at Cafe Tinh Te, 390 Ba Thang Hai Street in HCMC’s District 10 will include yoga asanas, glow in the dark body paint, yoga music, vegetarian refreshments and more.

Come in your most colorful neon Halloween yoga gear and body paint will be provided. Participants will be charged VND200,000 each, inclusive of food and one non-alcoholic drink. Tickets are available for pick up at the following addresses: 201 Bis Hoang Van Thu Street, Phu Nhuan District, (contact Linh on 01204625051); 57 Tran Nhat Duat Street in HCMC’s District 1 (contact Anna 01214663425); No. 91A, Road 85 in HCMC’s D7 (contact Nat 0967084120).  Bookings are essential, no tickets means no entry.
