VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese and foreign letters are engraved, sprayed or painted onto the walls, columns, and cliffs in famous caves in Ha Long Bay, a world natural wonder.

Chinese characters found in caves in Ha Long Bay

Sung Sot Cave is located in the central area of the world natural heritage site. This is one of the biggest and most beautiful caves in the bay.

With a total area of over 10,000 m2, the cave door is 25 meters from the sea surface. Sung Sot cave is divided into two main compartments. The first compartment looks like an immense hall and it is compared to the opera theatre in Ha Long Bay. However, this compartment is smeared with letters that are engraved or painted into the rock.

Letters on a large stone pillar in the second compartment. As one of the typical karst caves in Ha Long Bay, with high scientific value, Sung Sot was discovered by the French in 1901.

In early 2012, Sung Sot Cave was voted by the Association of Czech Tourism Offices and Agencies as one of the top 10 beautiful caves in the world … However, the cave is now covered with letters in English, Vietnamese and Chinese.

In Dau Go cave, many pillars and stalagmites are spoiled by letters in Vietnamese and foreign letters, particularly Chinese characters. Many words are carved in very difficult positions, such as the cave roof.

Ms. Pham Thuy Duong, Head of the Ha Long Bay Management Board, said these letters appeared before 1994, when Ha Long Bay was not recognized as a world heritage.

Duong said the board was consulting domestic and foreign experts to delete these letters, which are engraved on rock, in the most effective way to not directly affect the surface of cliffs in caves. “We will handle and remove the letters as soon as possible,” Duong said.
