VietNamNet Bridge – The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is an annual event to honor the most impressive architectural works around the world. This year, Vietnam has six works nominated in five categories.
The World Architecture Festival was first held in 2008 as a “festival and live awards competition dedicated to celebrating and sharing architectural excellence from across the globe.” In the first four years the festival was held in Barcelona and since 2012 in Singapore.
This year the festival is to be held in Singapore in early November.
At the festival around 200 shortlisted projects compete for awards in 31 categories. One of these projects is awarded the World Building of the Year title. All the entries are published in the World Buildings Directory online database and each year the World Architecture Festival publishes a list of the winners of the awards.
The World Architecture Festival has announced the shortlist for its 2015 awards, with six from Vietnam. The world’s largest architectural awards program, WAF received more than 700 entries from architects and designers representing 47 countries.
The six nominees from Vietnam:
1. Cam Thanh Community House in Hoi An ancient town (Civic and Community Award)
This Vietnam community centre by architecture studio 1+2>3 features bamboo roofs thatched with coconut leaves, which pitch inwards to direct rainwater towards a series of planted courtyards.
The house was built in the rural Cam Thanh commune of Hoi An town, a popular tourist destination in central Vietnam.
Located in the southeast of Hoi An – a tourism destination in the middle of Vietnam with an historic quarter and breathtaking seashore, Cam Thanh is known for its mangrove forests, crisscrossed waterways, coconut forests and small looming villages. Despite having such great potential due to naturally diverse ecology and local handicraft business, Cam Thanh remains a poor area with low living standards.
The lack of connection between Cam Thanh and the old quarter – the centre attracting both domestic and foreign tourists – has made it difficult to promote tourism and foster the local economy. Cam Thanh is also affected by climate change’s consequences: heat-wave, typhoons and rising sea level. These have raised the need for a physical platform acting as a community hub to provide linkage between local and social, scientific and economic groups which are interested in strengthening the connection with Cam Thanh, creating more tourist opportunities and contributing to the sustainable development of the commune.
The Cam Thanh Community Centre was designed to fulfill this requirement. The centre, located in the commune’s core, includes three buildings providing a continuous zoning flow. By using flexible partitions, the space can be modified to adapt different requirements: meetings, exhibitions and events, combined with library, training courses and cafeteria.
The open courts resemble the Hoi An’s ancient quarter houses, using convection ventilation. The complex also has a playground, organic vegetable farm, areca garden and sport field. Cam Thanh Community House is expected to become a sharing place, an experimental organic agriculture hub and an ideal rest stop for tourists in the future.
The structure is simple with the efficient usage of local resources and material. Vines hanging across areca garden, together with the coconut leaves roof, can drastically reduce solar radiation and provide shade. Strong wood columns and bamboo frames support the large and sloping-in roof, collecting rainwater for reuse in irrigation and daily activities. Surrounding walls, made of double-layer adobe brick, create air cushions and insulation. This structure can help the building withstand windstorms.
Inspired by the traditional courtyard of the ancient house, areca garden and featured vines of the rural area, Cam Thanh Community Centre – the embodiment of Hoi An culture – creates a symphony of shade. The development of this Community house will be the first and hopefully the successful example will be replicated in different areas, therefore gradually shaping the architectural identity of new development areas in Hoi An.

2. FA house – Father’s house and Farmhouse – Da Lat city (New & Old – Completed Building)
The house was built by the owner’s father and abandoned for 20 years. This house has become a keepsake, so the host wanted to keep the old form of it. The solution of architects is to surround the old house with a transparent material to avoid environmental impact.

4. LayerScape by Kien Truc O, Da Nang City (Office – Completed Buildings)
The point of creating architecture is to provide a habitable space for one to dwell within nature. The boundaries between man-made environment and nature must be in a coherent symbiosis. One must embrace the other and vice versa.
The core principle of this project is to provide multiple transitional layers from inside out and outside in to achieve a soft and light spatial transparency.
This spatial emergence is cultivated by deep understanding of local architecture, skillful composition of geometrical planes to create functional spaces with view and access to indoor and outdoor gardens.
Thus, the boundaries exist in a dimension drawn by a blurred line between inside, outside, man-made space and nature.
Layerscape is a series of fluctuating layers of space engaged in a horizontal dimension, which works in a mutual cooperation in order to achieve a harmonious relationship that satisfies human needs and stimulates coexistence between humans and the natural ecology.

5. Saigon House by a21 Studio, HCM City (House – Completed Building)
Saigon has altered beyond recognition; for architects, it is hard to call it a development. It is, actually, a sequence of destructions: a destruction of culture, architectural values… and especially, their beautiful memories of Saigon.
Saigon House is a space dedicated to the old Saigon-Gia Dinh, typically “Van Duong” Palace, an architectural masterpiece of a Saigonese, Vuong Hong Sen. However, it has been undermined by human stupidity.
Saigon House shows the architects’ love for Saigon’s alleys, which are romantic in both rain and sunshine.

6. Termitary House by Tropical Space, Da Nang City (House – Completed Building)
The Termitary House was built in the largest city in central Vietnam, Da Nang. The climate in this area is rather extreme in the way it varies significantly between the sunny season and the rainy one. It is also influenced by a lot of tropical storms every year. Da Nang is also well-known for the remains of Champa baked-brick Towers (during the Ancient Champa Kingdom), constructed from the 4th century to the late 15th century. Of all, My Son Holy Land is the most well-known.
Inspired by the termites’ special ability to build nests in the local area, the architect has designed the house with a large sharing space in the center where a cooking counter, a dining table, and an entertaining corner are found. This “lobby” then leads to different functional areas in the house such as the rest room, the living room, and the bedrooms. All are connected artistically and comfortably. The mezzanine is where another bedroom, an altar room, and a small library are found.
The house is mainly built with baked bricks which are also a traditional material in the local area. They are the very same material used for the construction of the mysterious ancient Champa towers. The ceilings are cast with original concrete, and the floors are covered with terrazzo in dark colors. All furniture is made with timber from the roof of the old house, which saves the total actual cost of the construction significantly.
That the walls are entirely built with baked bricks makes the house cool in the summer; for this kind of brick can function to prevent humidity from the entire house. The special construction technique of “double skins” with two layers of one brick wall covering outside and one glass-aluminum frame inside creates a space within a wall, which functions as a buffer at both gables.
The special design of the baked-brick walls with a lot of holes, together with the large inter-floor space, allows breeze and light to get to all the corners of the house, even the hardest-to-access areas. The house owners are also able to enjoy the blue sky during the daytime or the moonlight from the living room, the dining table or the kitchen.
At different times during the day, the variety of the light through the inter-floor holes changes the brick wall colors from light red in the morning, red at noon, dark red in the afternoon and more purple in the late afternoon and early evening. In the evening and at night, the house looks like a giant lantern with lights here and there from the holes. The surrounding brick walls are decorated with some rough bricks to make shadows. This improves the beauty and charm of every single brick’s shape and color.
Both the yard and the garden are covered with coarse gravel with some of the plants (which are rearranged) from the old house in order to retain familiar features for the owners. Taking the best advantage of ventilation, lighting system and natural air conditioning has optimized The Termitary House’s positive tropical elements.
