Work will start Thursday on a project to turn Nguyen Van Binh Street in downtown HCMC into a public space for book enthusiasts. The project is expected to be up and running on November 23.
The city government on Monday approved the project proposed by the Department of Information and Communications and drawn up by TA Landscape Architecture.
The book street of Nguyen Van Binh will be a brand-new venue for book lovers. It is located in the heart of the city and near some landmarks which are on the city’s conservation list, such as the Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral.
Pham Ai Thuy, director of TA Landscape Architecture, said the book street is designed in a way that balances heritage and modernity.
The 123.6-meter-long street will feature 19 book stalls on the sidewalk of Nguyen Van Binh Street just behind the office of the People’s Committee of District 1. The back wall of the committee office will be used for graffiti paintings with book-related themes
An area covering 110 square meters on the sidewalk on the side of the Post Office will be home to an outdoor book café and public activities.
A second outdoor book café is designed in modern style for exhibiting new books while the area for statues and chairs is 190 square meters.
Three kiosks will be set up in front of Nguyen Van Binh Street between the Post Office and the Notre Dame Cathedral to sell newspapers or take-away coffee.
The lighting system will be upgraded with light-emitting diode (LED) lamps and equipped with sensors to save energy by producing strong light when the street is crowded and vice versa.
Book publishers and distributors must have the designs of their stalls approved by the organizers to ensure the aesthetics for the book street.
The book street will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
